My reception is OK (not the greatest but OK) up to about channel 32. Then the higher I go the worse it gets. My favourite sports channel 53 is brutal. The cable in the house is only split once so it shouldn't be that bad. Would a cable booster make it clear?

I am currently a cable tech in the Kansas City area. There are a couple of possible problems with your cable. If one of your TV's is clear but the other one is bad then you probably have a problem with that specific cable line or the side of the splitter that feeds that TV. To solve this you can either try loosening or tightening the fitting on your cable connection at the TV, or you will need a new RG-6 line ran to that TV. Now, if both of your TV's are bad then it is probably the feed from the cable ped or pole to your house. It is not uncommon for people to dig and slice a buried cable line just enough to give bad reception. Also, if you have an aerial line coming to your house from a pole then you probably have a problem with squirrells chewing through the cable. They do this mostly in the winter because the small amount of power running through the cable lines warms them up. If you check outside and see any silver braiding exposed you should call your cable company and they should replace the drop for free. In either instance a cable "booster" (amplifier) would not help you. All it would do is boost an already poor signal.

Is this satellite cable or traditional cable like Comcast? If it's satellite then the splitter is causing the problem. You can't split a satellite signal. You need a cable from your dish directly to the cable box. If it's traditional cable then you have a bad connection or bad cable. Make sure there's a good connection at the ends of the cables. Also make sure the cable is not bent 90 degrees, cut, chewed up by pets, or destroyed in any way.

From the question I assume you are getting your cable from a cable provider. If so, it would be a good idea to contact their technical support team.
