i left a couple of really small round magnets in my room for a long period of time (2 years) and today when i found them i noticed some were peeling

by this I mean that there was some sort of layer coming off the magnets, it was very thin and grey/black

does anyone know what this can be? is my magnet still good to use?

I think it means they're ripe.

This is called spalling. The magnets are a neodymium alloy that corrodes in air. Unlike some metals, like silver, the oxide does not form a patina. instead is spalls off. For this reason many magnets of this type have a shiny nickel plate to protect them.
