you can't kill a virus, they are not living. white blood cells are the targets of HIV, which is a virus, it replicates inside them and they require it to reproduce copies.
the white blood cells recognize proteins on the surface of the virus, which is how they take the virus into the cell by endocytosis.
the process is determined by immunity, basically white cells take in all things that the body recognizes as non-self, including blood particles from transfusions and any particle in the blood. that's why drug reactions can be dangerous, and why blood transfusions can result in immune reactions and how allergies occur.
the white cells are selected by a process called tolerance, in which the cells which recognize the bodies own tissues die by apoptosis.
read a book called the cell, it explains all of this in clear terms.

Your immune system does not reckonize the virus it reckonizes that the antigens on the virus are foreign. The specific arm of your immune systems attacks the antigen and when it destroys the antigen it will destroy what is attached to that antigen. In this case a virus. Your immune system can also attack a cell that has been infected by a virus. I would like to correct that other poster about the immune systems ability to destroy a virus. she stated that the immune system is "clueless". If this were the case humanity would not exist, we would all be dead.

White blood cells basically kill bacteria by surrounding it so it can't reproduce.
Your immune system kills viruses after it
recognises them as "enemies".

They know immediately when there is an invading organism in the body and immediately boost up to kill it. They stay at a high count until it's gone. Isn't the human body amazing?

The problem is that WBC's don't figure out how to kill viruses and that is why HIV and other viruses are so bad.
....WBC are good at recognizing bacteria, but they are clueless when it comes to viruses...
