It is always a bad idea to compare horses of different generations, and particularly those that run under different codes: there is no point in comparing flat horses to National Hunt horses.

Istabraq was a great hurdler, of that there was no doubt, but he was only an average flat racehorse. He was bred by Shadwell Stud and his sire is the mighty Sadler's Wells - not exactly a jumping pedigree!

I do not have a huge amount of knowledge about National Hunt racing, but I would say that yes Istabraq was good, but Arkle was the best - although I am too young to have seen him race!

As far as flat racehorses go I would have to rate Dubai Millennium, Montjeu, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard and Nijinsky as my top 5, in no particular order.

i would say no , he was a very good horse no doubt but by no means the greatest of all time . if hardy eustace wins the champion hurdle this year he will achieve the same feat as istabraq . and see you then and a few others . the best national hunt horse would probably be arkle and the best of the modern era best mate , the best flat horse is another thing altogether and i think the best i,ve seen is galileo and high chaparal

I gotta say, some the answers above me rock! I agree on comparing different horses from different eras. Big shout out to the gal who mentioned Assault what a tough little horse. I'm gonna go with 2. The one who didin't win the triple crown but won alot of people's hearts, Funny Cide. And for my all time fav. It's gotta be Seattle Slew, here's a horse who not only won the triple crown but, went on to become one of the best sires in history.

I believe it's a toss up between Isatabraq and Lay Low. Remember how Lay Low came from way back to capture the Kentucky Derby in 1963 and went on to win the Triple Crown. Lay Low and Isatabraq were horses similar in style and strength and both could really turn on the speed at just the right time. I watch videos on both Isatabraq and Lay Low all the time and just marvel at their skills and the almost and seemingly effortless way they used to win their races. Of course, Isatabraq was a slightly bigger horse and therefore had the strength advantage on Lay Loy in a one on one competition but fortunately Lay Low never went head to head with Isatabraq. For my money, I would bet on either horse to win. Both are quality Hall of Fame horses and made household names of jockey's Mario Gutierrez and Salvatore Gussaponte. Again, they were both great horses and will always we memorialized for their wonderful contributions to the sport.

I love the answer above me and I have to say comparing horses is hard to do because there are so many different types, so many different sports. My favorite horses of all time are Man o' War and Ruffian

I would have to say Man o' War. He was 21-20 and finished second in the 1 race he lost.
