I always use hot hot soapy water with vinegar in it, and baking soda to scrub it with a bottle brush. There is a reaction between vinegar and baking soda, harmless on the skin, but I mention it because if the sink is FULLish, you will run over with foam. Also don't shake the contents in a Nalgene bottle. You will have a real mess all over the place.

No foul smells from drinks, including that of chemicals. Bleach leaves a taste in your bottle and a lot of other cleaners do too. The vinegar smell dissipates, no matter what you clean with it, and I use it in laundry, tupperware that takes on food odors etc.

My friends say they are dishwasher safe, I myself do not have a DW. I would wonder about the lids unless they were really secured tight on the top rack.

I have also heard of cleaning your water stuff, including hydration bladders, with DENTURE cleaner. Its fizzy you know, and is made to break up particles without a lot of messing around.

Cleaning Nalgene Bottle

If you used your bottle for years, the plastic can start getting foggy and there is little you can do about it. No amount of cleaning will help. Try your best with baking soda and stay away from strong cleaning agents as they can cause a chemical reaction with the plastic of the bottle.

Dish soap and some scrubbing with a bottle brush. Baking soda is great fro getting out odors occasionally.

While bleach may be used in very, very small quantities to clean unsafe water in emergencies, it's best to leave caustic chemicals out of our digestive systems.

If you got something really nasty growing in your bottle, toss it and get a new one.

Yes it's perfectly safe as a matter of fact Nalgene has a dropper(same material) that is designed for many fluids, h2o2 is one of them. Be careful if you leave it in the bottle for a while, that no one takes a drink.
