I read a question and the answers to it (link below). Several people mentioned that they were worried that the USA would be ravaged like Sodom and Gomorrah if we legalized gay marriage! I am shocked, never even considered that reason! Does anyone else think this?

I'm not saying it's unreasonable to worry about this...God killed unborn babies (innocents) at Sodom and Gommorah and also in the flood because of what others were doing...

So you've chosen to believe in one part of your religion, but not another?

The four cities of Sodom, Gemorrah, Admah, and Zeboim were destroyed for the sins of their citizens. The New Testament had Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of people, however, and taught to love one another - one and all... the sinners, your enemies, ONE AND ALL.

Um, by the way.. remember that the bible also very clearly lets you know that God judges, not you. You don't get to turn against anyone because your God reserves the right to judge... seems people forget the small print.

Edit: Just a quick note about this line: "Homosexuality is the same as lying, stealing, lusting, and premarital sex in Gods eyes. "

That's not true. Remember those Big Ten Commandments? Thou shalt not steal? Thou shalt not bear false witness? Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife? Thou shalt not commit adultery?

There isn't one that says Thou Shalt Not be Gay. If it were the same, wouldn't it have made the list? Oh, and remember that not keeping the Sabbath holy is a bigger sin. What did you do last Sunday?

Edit2: Pah! Do you people even read the Bible?

Leviticus' abominations include mixing two different types of fabrics (wool and linen), planting more than one type of seed in a pasture, sex while menstruating... Many CHOOSE to single out homosexuality as a damning sin due to personal affront. Where are the demonstrations against the farmers? The cloth makers?

I find it odd when devout Christians make so much fuss and bother about every little "sin" in the Bible, and forget the main message - love thy neighbor, do unto others as you would them do unto you, peace and love and being groovy with each other.

Besides, legalizing gay marriage wouldn't necessarily impact Christians at all, because it wouldn't mean that the church has to perform or even recognize these marriages. The Christians are free to condemn lots of things that are permissable under state law, like sex before marriage and the death penalty and partial nudity on TV.

Although I understand the rationale that by tolerating what they believe is a grave sin, they are tacitly condoning it and therefore share in the blame of not trying to put a stop to what they feel is wrong. But God doesn't seem to really be into that sort of Old Testament raining brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah style of punishment anymore... mostly He just sits back and lets human muck things up on their own, and suffer the ozone-depleted, war-ridden, toxic results of our own mistakes.

First off - There was only 1 "righteous" man in Sodom, and that was Abrahams nephew Lot. God said he would save Sodom and Gomorrah if Abraham could find even 10 who were righteous but Abraham couldnt.

Secondly - I think God would be more angry if we were INtollerant of homosexuality. God never gave us the power to say one sin was worse than the other. *Yes, I believe it is a sin*. And the bible is very clear about the fact that "we are ALL sinners". If Christians think they are holy or special because we are saved, then they are very very wrong. We are blessed, and unworthy of such a gift.

Homosexuality is the same as lying, stealing, lusting, and premarital sex in Gods eyes.

Our job is to "be a light in the darkness". All that means is show the joy that God gives you, and love people for who they are. (The TRUE meaning of Hate the Sin, not the Sinner)

Of course, if people want to know WHY you are so happy, then you tell them! :)

Actually, the angels that went to Sodom and Gomorrah could not find even 5 righteous in the entire city. Since children are innocent perhaps God somehow spared them in a manner we don't fully understand and the rest were destroyed.

I don't think we'll be judged for someone else being gay, that's just dumb. Telling gays they can't marry isn't gonna make them suddenly turn straight, so there's not point in not legalizing it. On the up side, it would be helpful for their loved ones if they could benefit from their life insurance policies without being penalized for not being married, being able to get family medical insurance, probating estates, etc..

As a christian, not only do I have no right to judge others, I have my own sins to deal with.

youre basically saying would God be mad at us for tolerating sin. Would God be mad at you for tolerating someone with an alcohol, drug, or sex addiction? Equally so, tolerance is a healthy thing as long as people are aware of your stance on the matter and it doesn't interrupt your walk with Christ. We are called to love the sinner and hate the sin. I think that's the most important thing to keep in mind here.

No, I'm not afraid "god" would be mad. Because I don't really care what the mythological book says, I think that if two people love each other, no matter if it's woman/woman, man/man or woman/man and they want to make a life commitment to each other, who are we to say no to them?

I think God will more likely be mad at all those who profess to love him yet go out of their way to repress anyone who may be 'different' (black, gay, Muslim, whatever). If God made everyone, what right do we have to pick and choose which 'groups' of his making are worthy of our love and 'tolerance'?
