Was in China once for holiday with my friends. We were brought by the local tour guide to these 3 factory which is a must accroding to the tour guide because the govt said so. So fine... he brought us to a jade, tea and a medicine factory. In the medicine factory, we get to attend a brief seminar in which the dr taught us how to feel our pulse. After the seminar, me and my friends were walking around looking at those herbs and animal parts but some older visitors were brought in to separate small room for pulse reading. After about 30 minutes we left for the tour bus and all of us were waiting for just one lady. Her friend came out complaining she was asked to leave the room where her friend was and some of the worker in the factory were guarding the door not letting her in. Then she said the so called dr kept asking the friend to buy herbs and it doesn't cost just a few bucks but hundreds. My friend who was with me said her brother got into the same problem - he was told he need to buy some herbs to be healthier (he wasn't sick or anything) and he was asked to get herbs that will last him for years and it cost him about thousand bucks too. He only knew he was cheated when he came back but at least he can consider the herbs like a extra supplements ;p

Yes, as stated above, there are many scams in China, and the same with the rest of the world. I actually have counterfeit Chinese money that was passed by me.
Another big thing, stealing passports. I had a friend who left it in their bag on the traincar table while they slept. When he woke up, his passport and bag were gone, the cab door was locked, but the train window was open a bit, so they figured someone hung onto the train and got it! Pretty crazy.
Another big scam, some of the adoption agencies. One of my friends who lives there has personally seen and knows women who have had their babies stolen and sold to foreigners(who honestly thought they were getting an orphan) and women who just have babies, only to be sold to foreign adoptive parents, who think they are getting a baby that was abandoned by a river. It's super sad, but there are legit adoptions.

While most of us want to help the less fortunate, there are commonly beggars (especially when you get out of Church) who look upon this as a source of income. An extremely tragic event took place last year in Shanghai (where I live), when a 3-year old Korean girl was kidnapped, had her tongue cut out and arms cut off, so she would look pitiful and collect money for the evil ones who did this. In this rare case, the girl was found and the villains jailed. But, she will go her entire life maimed.

More formal scams, like investment schemes, are becoming more common. It seems real estate is one area of real concern.

You name it, they have it. There are a few classical ones.
From the professional beggers, miracle cure medicine sales, found money in a package, found ancient treasure, phoney foreign currencies, to many of the fire sales of non existing goods and real estates.
There is a sucker born every minute, literally.
