I'm sure there are many conditions that vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms of but a lot of times they are due to a parasite, such as Coccidia. It is usually transferred through exposure to another animal's parasite-infected feces. I have an open yard at a dead-end road by an empty field with railroad tracks - a lot of wild animals, especially rabbits, roam through the area including our yard and leave their droppings (rabbit droppings look like a pile Coco Puffs cereal). My 2 dogs (each 2 1/2 yrs. old) will eat these droppings (as much as I try to keep the droppings picked up and shoo my dogs away from any droppings that I miss, they still manage to eat some). When you say the vet didn't see anything wrong with the "tests", what "tests" do you mean - what tests did they do? A lot of times Coccidia will not show up in the fecal test, it can be hard to detect and is usually diagnosed by the symptoms - watery diarrhea, gas, vomiting, blood in stool. There is no "cure" for it, the symptoms are treated with antibiotics and anti-diarrhea medicine then eventually the dog's immune system is supposed to kick in and fight it off. The symptoms can come and go and the dog can still be infected, one of my dogs had the diarrhea problem and her fecal exam was negative, then her stools went back to being solid but had streaks of blood in it and then the fecal exam tested positive. Also my neighbor's dog had Coccidia and my dogs would play with her and even though they never came into contact with her stool one of my dogs still got Coccidia - from the other dog or the rabbit poop? I don't know. As far as your other dog getting sick too, I think the dog has to actually somehow ingest the infected stool to become infected - but sniffing another dog who may still have some fecal matter on it could probably do it too. The one dog of mine that has had Coccidia seems to be more susceptible to parasites, she has had Giardia (Giardia symptoms include diarrhea and gas but NOT vomiting) a few times and then the Coccidia, and even though my other dog is in close contact with her and eats the rabbit droppings too and does plenty of "sniffing" she has never gotten sick with parasites or had diarrhea. So I guess it just depends on each dog's susceptibility to parasites. Everything I am telling you is just from the experiences I've had with my dogs and what I have learned along the way as something comes up - I am not a professional and like I said diarrhea and vomiting can be symptoms of any number of things - just thought I'd share what it was due to with my dogs. Even if it isn't a parasite it is always a good idea to pick up all poop immediately and if necessary wipe your dogs' bottoms afterward - I keep a tub of baby wipes by my door and when my dogs come in after pooping I wipe them. Sorry such a long post! I know how it feels when your pet is sick and it can't tell you what's wrong and you would do anything to make it better - I hope they get better soon!

This may not be what caused the problems but it's something I read about and like to let people know about.
If you use swifter wet jet floor cleaner one of the ingredients in the solution is the same as anti-freeze. There have been reports that dogs have gotten sick and died from licking the floor or their paws.
Another thing you wouldn't think is dangerous to your pets is natural coco landscaping mulch.
The smell attracts the dogs to eat it.They get sick vomiting and can die.
Your dogs could have eaten something that was bad.If their symptoms persist I would bring them back to the vet. I would recommend a vet school if you're near a university.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well dogs are very much like ppl. If your dog has been over exposed to cold weather, this may cause him to have diahria.
As for the vommitting, he may be alergic to something in his food. Try the IAMS brand of dog food. It may be slighty more expensive but it's very healthy. Choose the type of IAMS food that would fit your dog best!
If these changes dont work i would consider rechecking with your veterinarian. there is a virus called Parvo that your dog may have gotten by eating something outside, (such as garbage ext)
But it is curable with some antibiotics so dont worry!
good luck and i hope he gets better!

It sounds like it's "environmental"; that is, there is something in the dog's environment that's making them ill.
We suggest taking your dogs, and a sample of their poop (in a ziploc bag), to another vet and get a second opinion.
If the second vet cannot find anything in the digestive system that's causing the dogs to be sick, you'll have to become an investigator and go through your home and yard looking for the culprit. It could be something toxic they're eating outside or in the garage, it could be something in the air (like fumes or carbon monoxide), it could be something in the water (like giardia or coccidia), or something that comes in contact with their skin (like a sudden change in the kind of laundry detergeant you're using or something)...

It's possible there is a contagious virus that one dog passed to the other. I'd check in with your vet again. Chances are, if your other dog recovered, then follow the same program - withhold food for a day and then bland diet after that.

have you checked the expiration date on your dog food bag? it could be expired. is there something in the environment that they may be getting into that you are not seeing? garbage outside etc., did you switch dog food brands and not do a slow transition?
hope it helps.
