you may want to consider purchasing from a breeder, if you have to get one from an out of state breeder and have it shipped

The pound may do the same thing the shelter did, most places will not sell or even give a dog to someone who does not have a fence. With not having a fence they see it as the dog will be couped up in the house all day or chained up in the yard. I suggest getting fence or like someone else said, buy from a breeder but they may ask about the yard and surroundings too. Good Luck

Often if animal shelters won't let you adopt a dog, it's for a good reason. If you don't have a fenced-in yard, you should seriously consider getting at least a chain link kennel. It's harder than you might think to take a dog out on a leash every time he has to go to the bathroom. If you at least have a kennel in the yard, you can put him in that to do his business.

I recommend fencing your yard or getting a kennel before you get a dog. If you feel that you'll be able to take him out on a leash to go to the bathroom several times a day and take him to fenced areas where he can romp off-leash regularly, then explain that to the animal shelter.

At shelters, they call it adopting but you are also buying the dog. The price matters how big the dog is. If it's small..hmmm..around $250 or $150 and that includes microchip, shots, etc. Get a fence if you want it! There are some things you have to give up to bring one in your life. There is a website where you can adopt dogs all over the country, really popular, but i can't remember. Any help? Good luck!

I live in an apartment where i don't have a fenced yard. i was able to adopt a dog from a city animal shelter in boston. some of the city shelters or pounds have easier requirments to meet than private shelters. you will still have to fill out an application, and they will still ask you for land lord permission and things like that, but they might be more willing to overlook something like a fenced yard if they believe you will provide a good home for a dog. good luck and thanks for considering adoption!

I have never heard of a shelter not letting you adopt a dog because you dont have a fenced in yard, that's ridulous because I just adopted a beagle-who LOVES to run, from my shelter, they never asked if my yard was fenced in, and it's not, I dont even have a yard as i live in an apartment, so i take her down the road a bit to the park. they must have had another reason to not let you adopt a dog there.

I know here Dog Pounds adopt out for $45 for fixed dogs. $85 for unfixed but they are usually sent to the shelter. Call your local dogpound and they will be able to tell you the requirements for adoption. Shelters just get picky because they get so many dogs turned back in for reasons of allergies, new baby, moving, divorce, no room for him/her to play, bigger than expect.....so they are more picky. Here the shelter only requires a fenced yard for certain dogs/breeds like for example Beagles and other Hound dogs.

Go to petfinder.com and it will list shelters in your area. All will ask questions but different shelters have different policies about fenced yards, so you will have to ask each one. Our shelter asks about fenced yards but does not necessarily deny adoption based on it. If the owner is home and can take the dog out, we will consider an adoption.
