does he put anything else in his mouth that is non-food? does he want to gorge on food? when he does eat, does he seem to 'mouth' the food differently than you typically would 'mouth' that food? there is a thing called pica that is a disorder that causes people to eat non-food items. I have had both a severe case and one case that is not so bad. With the severe child, I could not even put out crayons in my classroom or they were gone. This girl I have this year licks the floor, or will eat the grass on the playground. She is expected to outgrow it. good luck!

The condition you are describing is called pica, and is usually a temporary condition that improves as children get older. But for individuals with developmental or mental health issues, pica can be a more prolonged concern. Depending on your child's age and developmental stage, your pediatrician can work with your child to teach him ways to eat more appropriately. They can also educate you on teaching the child about acceptable and nonacceptable food substances. Medication may also be prescribed to help the behavior associated with pica.

Oh my God – a human beaver!!! I would love to see him in a jail cell. He’d probably chew thru the bars? Hahaha – sounds like he needs a little training. Maybe if you call Super nanny, she can tell you how. I ate wood growing up. It is a psychological disorder but not permanent. It can be handled with proper “teaching”. Never tell him “NO” followed with a spank or whatever. Always tell him “why” not and scare him. Make him respect dry walls. Maybe show him a picture of a stomach with cancer and tumors and tell him hey, this is what it will look like if you keep eating that stuff.

It could be a vitamin deficiency or it could be that he is or was teething and it was soothing his gums.
