Antique black powder is a low explosive which is compounded from finely ground charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate, commonly called "saltpeter". Dixie Gun Works used to have the entire story of powder making in their catalog. You might try e-mailing them for a copy.
Modern gun powder is a much more chemically complex mixture which is comprised mainly of nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose, or "gun cotton"(cotton treated with nitric acid), with stabilizing chemical elements added.

Note that the answer above is for black powder. More firearms these days use smokeless powder, which is completely different and is based on nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose.

When you are old enough and responsible enough to deal with it, you will be able to do the research yourself and find out.
