collection will settle for a less amount almost all the time. Threatening with a judgement is against the FDCPA. There are laws that govern collection practices. Depending on the amount of the debt (you can always go to annualcreditreport.com for the amount and it is free, NOT freecreditreport.com) If they harass you they can be liable for civil suit. Always settle the end of the month, they will give you the best settlement offer.

Send them a certified letter requesting the balance on your account, keep copies of everything. If you're talking about a very large debt you should consult an attorney. If it's a small amount, just send the letter, tell them you're not making another payment until they respond to your request. And you want to know the balance and how the payments you've made have been applied.

You document every last detail of everything you have ever done with them. Then you take it to your state commerce department and file a complaint.

For them to refuse to send you an updated balance and to continue to threaten litigation is probably bordering on illegal.

Write down times, dates, who you spoke with, what happened. The more ammo you have, the better your case will be.

How much was the original balance?
How many payments have you paid?
How much is each payment?

Multiply number of payments against amount of each payment and subtract from balance.
You'll know how much is left.

Past that, just call and request they send you a current statement.

Just be civil when you call and I'm sure they'll help you.
