The Essix retainera are on my top and lower teeth and I've just finished my brace treatment (four years, traintracks) and i got these today. I was quite surprised as they took the mold and in the hour the retainers were ready but after an hour or so of wearing them I started having the most excruciating pain and I took them out and looked at the bottom and they are not smooth , they are very jagged and pointy at the ends and sides. I really don't know what to do but Im having trouble eating, drinking and talking as I experience excruciating pain and have developed sore throat. WHAT SHALL I DO?

Thank you for any help you can provide :)!

Take them back to your dentist who made them and tell them how much pain they are causing you. Show them the jagged, uneven edges on the brace and they should adjust it for you.
Shame this has happened as I know what its like to wear braces, and still wear an Essix retainer.
Good luck hun

You should call the office, the appliance should not have any sharp edges that would cause trauma to the tissue. The pain your having doesn't sound familiar at all. But it's obvious that no one smoothed the edges. You aren't suppose to eat or drink with them on. You may have just developed a sore throat, just because you were getting one, not because of the retainer. I would def call them and take them back in. Something is going on that shouldn't be other than the rough edges.

Schedual another appointment with you Orthodontist it sure sounds like it is not your swollen gums! You must tell them right away so they can fix it. Okay? Good luck! :D I might know this one because i have had years of experience with braces and now I am wearing a retainer.

go back to the dentist...well the dentist may have to adjust them some more so there are not pointy...all so place some wax on the pointy areas. also take some Tylenol for the pain.
