SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED, BLUE…

The tradition of “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue” comes from an Old English rhyme. These four objects that a bride adds to her wedding outfit or carries with her on the big day are good luck charms.

Something Old represents continuity - the link with the bride's family and the past. - I had my grandmothers necklace

Something New offers optimism for the future - good fortune and success in the bride's new life. - I had a handkerchief to carry

Something Borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness - to remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her when help is needed. - I had my mother in laws pearl earrings

Something Blue stands for purity, love and fidelity. – A symbol of faithfulness and loyalty - I had a blue rosary

The English rhyme ends with and a silver sixpence in your shoe. - My mother had a sixpence her father gave her and have passed it down to all of my sisters.

Old, borrowed AND blue was a light blue silk hankie my grandmother loaned me. The new was my wedding attire.

Oh, and don't forget a penny in the shoe (for prosperity)!
