Are you by any chance from Ireland?
I ask because my sister married an Irish man and his mother brought their wedding cake and it was Fruit Cake, when we asked "Fruit Cake???" she said it was traditional Irish wedding cake and it was really important to him and his family that it be this.
On to your question, if you choose a chocolate cake, you will have about and inch worth of icing on it because the cake is really dnse and heavy, so the icing give it strength, so be aware of that, when we did our bites we both only got icing. So if you dont want the icing to be as thick go with a light colored cake like vanilla or white cake. Its really your filling that makes the cake and they can do anything, its amazing.
Best wishes!

I found a picture in a cake decorators magazine that was actually for a golden wedding anniversary and I fell in love with, but we didn't want a big huge expensive cake. So, we're doing a tiered cake with the decorations that I want only for the wedding party (and then the top layer for us to take for our 1st anniversary) and then sheet cakes for the rest of the guests. The bridal party cake will be marble and the sheet cakes will be one chocolate and one white. As much as I'd like to tell u to stay away from convention, theknot does have some pretty cakes. I found a hometown bakery thats working with us so our style comes across. Good luck!

I'm partial to a white then chocolate alternating tiered cake. People love the choice, but don't give them too many choices. Cakes that have four different flavors tends to make guests want to try them all -- and my guess is that you won't buy a 200 guest cake if 100 guest are coming. Too many choices can create a problem.
Also, Fondant frosting looks the nicest, but it has the least flavor. If you are concerned about taste, you want buttercream. If you could care less about taste and are going to beauty, fondant is what you want.

My fiance' and I are having our wedding on Halloween. We've decided to have a spice cake for our wedding cake to fill out the fall theme. It should go well with the mock apple cider (allergies) we are serving as well.

I heard of a clever idea: Instead of centerpieces, have smaller cakes. Then people go around the room trying samples of each cake, and you can have lots of cakes, and you don't have a dry cake from just having the one big cake (they tend to dry out).

I say go traditional and have a white cake with white icing. It's simple, costs less, and no one is disapointed with a strange flavor they wont like. You can also choose to serve a groom's cake, with chocolate. Then you have a variety, but still kept it simple enough to please almost everyone, if not everyone. I say make the cake great with the design, and leave the flavors plain.

My fiance loves carrot cake....so that will be the bottom tier. I love lemon cake with lemon filling, so that will be the next tier. The 3rd tier is chocolate, people love chocolate.
You really can do anything you want to!
