I require an general describstion on the fundamental construction techniques of an retaining wall. I,m more aware of the factors that impose on the design rather than the buiding of one. The type of wall doesnt matter i.e. Gabion, Crib or reinforced concrete.

Gary,
You've asked this same question many times and every time the good people on this site have told you they need more information on what your trying to do to give you an answer. Yet you still plod on asking. What everyone is trying to tell you is there are many different ways to construct a retaining wall. These range from as simple as stacking some railroad ties or landscaping timbers together and backfilling with dirt to complex systems that include piers and tension rods placed abck into the slope. So come on, give everyone the details or quit asking the question.

So, you want to know about considerations in constructing retaining walls rather than those in designing them.

Some construction issues:
- correctly prepared bearing surface
- keeping the slope stable while building the wall
- ensuring the design is implemented (i.e. proper compaction, proper drainage, correct levels and inclination, correct reinforcement)

As you can appreciate, the construction of a gravity block wall is completely different from a sheet pile wall, so I can only give general comments as above.

Remember that the main reason that retaining walls collapse is because:
- they haven't been designed by a qualified engineer
- the design instructions haven't been followed
- corners have been cut
- extrapolation of a design to a different situation by those not aware of the design issues in doing so

As you are new to this site can you take a piece of advice.

Do not submit your question 4 times. Compose the question carefully giving as much info about the subject as you can then use "Check Spelling" then "Preview" and when you have reread your answer and made any changes so it makes sense then and only then hit "Submit" once.

Occasionally someone gives an answer to which you can add some extra info to assist people in giving accurate replies. You can do this by using the Add Comment button. That way you do not have to repeat the question with extra info.
