I was thinking I would just do desserts at the wedding reception. Many cakes that my mom makes and then of course the traditional wedding cake. What would you think as a guest?

I did the same thing at my wedding last July. I did not limit the desserts to cake alone. We had two chocolate fountains, assorted fruits and cookies and pretzles to dip, plus cakes, cookies, truffles, etc to go alone with a bride and groom's cake. I served coffee alone with the desserts. Most (old) people love coffee with dessert. You might even choose to offer flavors to add to the coffee. I did allow for a few things that even diabetics could eat. Some fruits have less sugar than others, and some desserts could be made with splenda.

Weddings that have a dessert reception are wonderful. Here are my suggestions:

Cakes are great, but have other options: fruit with chocolate fondue, mini eclaires (you can buy them 24 a pack from Costco), and even cookies and tarts.

Candy "bars" are quite in right now: fill clear jars with candy that you love or that matches the color of your wedding. Leave cello bags for people to fill and silver scoops in each large jar.

If you are worried about guests coming looking for dinner, make sure your wedding starts well before dinner (3 p.m.) or after (7 p.m.). You can also include a note in the invitation that reads "Join us for a reception of drinks, desserts, and dancing."

When doing a dessert reception, guests don't need large tables to sit at. Large tables (think 12 guests for a sit down dinner) create flow problems especially when guests need to continually get up for more. Try to use smaller talbes that seat 6 or high boys, which are tall standing "barista" tables.

Also, you don't need seating for everyone at this kind of reception (I know that sounds wierd). Too much seating forces people to sit and stops them from mingling. Have about half as many chairs per guest.

As long as you make it clear it's a "Dessert Reception" on the invite, then it's fine. You may also want to think about having an afternoon reception, before dinner, or make sure you leave plenty of time for people to eat before the reception, and have it start at 8 or so.

If you told me it was a dessert only reception I would eat dinner then come for dessert and drinks. I am not there for the food I am there to honor your special day.

Wedding are so outrageous in price that people seriously need to consider not going 20K in debt over it. If your tight on cash then this is an excellent alternative.

As long as I was aware of this going in I'd be okay with it....you don't want your guests to not eat before thinking they're going to have a meal provided at the reception. They'd just get hungry and cranky, and might leave early to get some food!

If you choose a non-meal time of day for the ceremony AND reception, then it is perfectly legit to have a non-meal receptoin like a desserts reception.

But if you take up the guests' meal time, you MUST serve a meal.

As a guest I would think it was a great idea.....just make sure you have the reception in the evening so people aren't expecting a meal.

Congrats and best wishes!

that would be fun..its your wedding just let people know that if you are not having a dinner that its just a desert bar and maybe allow a bit of time between the wedding and the reception to allow for people to get something to eat.

Be sure to have variety: cookies, doughnuts, etc. I would enjoy it.
