You get it after the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Basically, you get it when you're REALLY into worship. I was overflowing with Joy when I got it. (that was the biggest understatement I've ever made)

I got it on a Youth rally called "Aquire The Fire".

Its the point where you lose yourself in worship and are completely covered with the Spirit of God.

I fell to my face that day.

I wanted the gift for years. I got it when the gift ceased to be important to me. I stiopped trying, served God and one day it happened. Unlike a lot of people I do not need to get worked up, excited or frenetic. When I want or need to speak in tongues, I open my mouth and speak.

Tongues usually takes one of two forms.

1) A private prayer language. Like any language it may seem very childlike and simple at first. As you grow your prayer language will mature with you. This language is for you to speak to God and is not intended for other ears. When you are speaking you speak to God through the Holy Spirit and others hearing is secondary.

2) A message for interpretation. In this case another person will explain the message as it is meant for the hearing body. Also in some cases the hearer receives the interpretation directly by being a native spearker of the specified language.

An interesting example I know of is a minister who has never learned Spanish, cannot read it or write it. However on several occasions while on missions trips to Mexico he has delivered sermons in perfectly accented Spanish. He has been tested scientically and no one has found a natural explanation.

Now a really cool variation is a small village in China where the entire village is illeterate. Not one person can read, or write but every member of the village can read from any Bible.

God's cool that way.

You already said why, it is a gift. God has not given this gift to you. It does not mean that He never will, but at this time He has not done so.
All gifts come from the Holy Spirit via God. You must definitely be saved and been obedient to GOD in everything. Does not mean we are without sin, just be obedient to HIM and serve HIM only. You may never get the gift of tongues, perhaps HE will use you in another astounding way. Perhaps Prophsey or healing or healing, or maybe just being sensitive to others. There are many gifts and God gives to whom HE may. NO ONE else can give you these gifts. Only GOD. So don't fall for someone saying that they will give you a gift.
Romans 12:6. Just read the entire chapter of Romans 12. It will explain it better than I can.

* Linguistics

The syllables that make up instances of glossolalia typically appear to be unpatterned reorganizations of phonemes from the primary language of the person uttering the syllables; thus, the glossolalia of people from Russia, the United Kingdom, and Brazil all sound quite different from each other, but vaguely resemble the Russian, English, and Portuguese languages, respectively. Many linguists generally regard most glossolalia as lacking any identifiable semantics, syntax, or morphology.[13] Glossolalia has even been postulated as an explanation for the Voynich manuscript.

* Psychology

The first scientific study of glossolalia was done by psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin as part of his research into the linguistic behaviour of schizophrenic patients. In 1927, G.B. Cutten published his book Speaking with tongues; historically and psychologically considered, which was regarded a standard in medical literature for many years. Like Kraepelin, he linked glossolalia to schizophrenia and hysteria. In 1972, John Kildahl took a different psychological perspective in his book The Psychology of Speaking in Tongues. He stated that glossolalia was not necessarily a symptom of a mental illness and that glossolalists suffer less from stress. He did observe, however, that glossolalists tend to have more need of authority figures and appeared to have had more crises in their lives.

A 2003 statistical study concluded that, among the 991 male evangelical clergy sampled, glossolalia was associated with stable extraversion, and contrary to some theories, completely unrelated to psychopathology.[14]

Nicholas Spanos described glossolalia as an acquired ability, for which no real trance is needed (Glossolalia as Learned Behavior: An Experimental Demonstration, 1987). It is also known as a simplex communication.

* Neuroscience

In 2006, at the University of Pennsylvania, researchers, under the direction of Andrew Newberg, MD, completed the world’s first brain-scan study of a group of Pentecostal Practitioners while they were speaking in tongues. The study found that while participants were exercising glossolalia, activity in the language centers of the brain actually decreased, while activity in the emotional centers of the brain increased.

New York Times wrote about the study, and it has been published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, Volume 148, Issue 1, 22 November 2006, Pages 67-71.

Isn't science great? It helps us find the answers to questions, instead of saying "god did it".

Not everyone will speak in tongues. Some have the gift of teaching. Other of healing and still other have the gift of speaking in tongues. Just because you do speak in tongues does not mean that you are not in Will. Seek HIM first.

God will provide this gift as it is needed. It's used for the specific purpose of spreading the gospel to people who don't speak your native language.

I'm willing to bet that so far the people that God has wanted you to share your testimony with have all been English speakers too - and that's okay, you're still sharing your testimony just the same.

There is debate if it still exists today but either way Paul clearly shows it to be a lesser gift and compels believers to desire better ones. .

yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
If you read all he teaches about gifts you will see that he shows a better way in 1 Cor 13.
So desire the better gifts especially prophecy. to be able to speak Gods Word,

I wish I could as well..the only person I've known who can speak in tongues is my pastor. For the first time I witnessed him doing it on this past New Year's Eve. It's incredible..it's like a beautiful song almost and though you can't understand a word of it it's amazing.

Keep praying..it'll happen!

I do not believe that speaking in tongues is a gift from God.....because anyone speaking in tongues can not be understood.
Did you ever stop and consider it might possibly be demons of the devil that are speaking....
