The Gimp is one of the best free photoshop alternatives it has a similar set of tools to photoshop, there is another excellent set of programmes which are very good for design work and photo editing: Serif photoshop & desktop though these are not free they regularly are given away with computer mags (older versions only). There is another free open source desktop publishing programme called Scribus, windows version from: http://www.scribus.net/index.php?name=Sections&req=viewarticle&artid=2&page=1 free & very useable.
Finally, come on Retroman are you serious, Windows XP pro $200 with more security holes than a pair of fishnet stockings. office xp pro $400, decent antivirus, antispam, firewall, spyware etc $????? per year the list goes on. If you go for open office, to name one free office suite, admittedly not quite all the features of office xp (but who uses them all anyway) in most respects as good as XP will open & edit microsoft files etc and direct export to PDF. I could go on and on.

there is photoshop aspects that is a trimmed down version and it does maximum issues familiar shoppers might want to ever want. that is drastically more inexpensive. there are various free ones accessible - although maximum in user-friendly words do undemanding stuff.
