Please give me your best guess on this.
I had asked someone to come and watch my two young kids for me (a close family member) that has always loved watching them and is always willing to come at anytime, everytime. This person seemed equally enthusiastic about this opportunity and I am very confused about how we got so "miscommunicated." If someone told you "Sure, I'll be there in the afternoon, later afternoonish," when would you think they might arrive?
Thanks so much!

Between 2:00 to 3:00 maybe? I would nail them down for a time, a real time with numbers, like TWO P.M. and have then say yes or no. There's nothing wrong with asking for an acutal time, it doesn't make you any less appreciative, it just make things less vague.

You can always blame the kids, if they are old enough to talk that is...call and ask, "The kids are bugging me, they want to know what time you'll be here? What time should I tell them? noon or 3pm?"

I'm dying to know~ what time did THEY think "afternoon, later afternoonish" is anyway?

When people say afternoon, late afternoonish, it means they aren't going to be there until later.

Your best bet is to just give them a ring on the telephone and ask if they could be there by a certain time. There is no harm in doing so, nobody will be offended, and the problem will be sorted out.

Afternoon generally means between 2 and 3 I would assume your guest would be arriving between 3 and 4:15. 4:30 is too close to evening.

Do you feel comfortable asking them what time? You could ask for an estimate so that you can "make sure everything is ready for them "

I would think between 3 and 4 because "Afternoon" is 1-3 and Early evening starts at about 5 then evening is from 6 to 8 then it is night. that's just me but i think it is pretty accurate for most people.

I would think about 6:00 p.m. But then again I'm in Europe and I think that would make a difference than the U.S.
