i went to walmart this morning and bought almost 200 dollars worth of groceries...my cart was overflowing....anyways since my cart was so full it was not possible for me to look thru each bag and see that i had everything i paid for....so i asked the cashier if she gave me all my bags and she said yes....(i usually ask cuz they have that plastic bag carousel and sometimes they don't spin it around for you to get all your bags).....anyways i get home and i found she hadn't given me one of my bags and i had to go all the way back to get my stuff (which turned out to be a huge mess by the way)....and as i was leaving the cashier saw me and said "oh, you forgot your steaks" and i said "no...YOU did".....
of course i feel it was her mistake since i specifically asked about the bags.....
what do you think??

the store was almost completely empty it was very early in the morning....she was not busy and no-one was behind me in line....
and of course i know i shouldn't dwell on it, but that's not what i'm asking
also she was totally lazy and rude....she just stared at me until i greeted her with a "good morning" and then continued to stare vacantly as i loaded up the conveyor belt....only once i had completely filled the conveyer belt (and i mean i had stuff stacked on top of each other) did she finally begin to scan my items

Well, wasn't sure at first since I thought she might've been busy and made an honest mistake overlooking it, just like you did when you didn't miss it right away.... but looking at your additional details, it's pretty obvious she was at fault. She did have time to look, you did specifically ask her but she was just too lazy to bother looking.
My advice though, if someone acts as uninterested as in your very last bit of additional details... don't rely on a person like that! I can understand you think it rude to double-check for yourself and if they are alert and friendly then it probably is distrustful to check up on them... but if they come across as careless and bored to start with then I think you can be a bit less considerate of their feelings & check on them anyhow! :)

I'd say it was A mistake.
In the end, does it really matter who made it? You feel the cashier made the mistake and by your description, it seems to be true. However, you could have verified you had everything before you left too.
I count how many bags my stuff is going in - had the same thing happed a few times - since I started doing that, I either catch a missing bag or am corrected when I mis count. Either way, I get out of the store with what I paid for.
It may have cost you a second trip, but you did get your steaks didn't you?

I believe the cashier was wrong. If you specifically ask if you have all your bags, it wouldn't have taken her long to look down at the carousel and make sure there wasn't a bag on the side you can't see. Just a point however, I make sure I spin the bags around one time when I pick my things up just to be sure. Most of the time, the cashier isn't paying very good attention.

Ok, you shopped at Walmart and you got what you paid for. If you want service, smiles, and intelligent cashiers, don't shop at Walmart!!
As for the bags... they are YOUR responsibility since they are YOUR purchases. The cashier doesn't really give a crap if you leave your stuff or not. Never trust a cashier at Walmart to ring everything up correctly or get all of your bags packed properly. Always inspect the bag carousel. I repeat, never trust a cashier at Walmart.

I think it was a mistake of both of you.
If you buy something, you should make sure you get what you're paying for.
The cashier should be proactive and as helpful as possible.
However, they've got a lot going on too.
However, it's your stuff. Your responsibility once you've paid for it.
And don't be rude to cashiers, when it's partly your blame and she didn't sound like she was being rude to you. It's a thankless job where people think they can push you around because you're "only a cashier." It's stressful and no one cares whether or not they're nice to you.

Both, but does it really matter? How hard would it have been for you to check the spinner yourself? Cashiers have very complicated, distracting jobs and it's easy for them to make the occasional sight error. But still, you did ask her if you had all your bags and she assurred you that you did. That said:
The "no, YOU did" comment was a bit snippy and unnecessary if you ask me. Did it really make a difference? You got your steaks back, right? She acknowledged that you walked off without them. Was the attitude justified?
I can assure you that she felt bad when you walked off without it, and then later not only DIDN'T feel bad anymore but had more than few choice names for you in her mind for that comment.
It was human error. I bet that happens again in your life, as it will to all of us. Everyone has walked away leaving something behind. Get used to it and drop the attitude. When it comes to your money and your purchases, YOU are the one ultimately responsible for making sure you have everything you paid for.

Its your fault because the cashier once she gets your money doesnt care wether or not you got all your bags, she just wants to get you out of the way so she can get to the next person. If something like this is that big of a deal to you then you should have checked YOURSELF wether or not you had all your bags.

I think the person to blame is you not her. It's not her job to keep track of your paid for things. Also I put the bags in myself from the thing at Spencer, LeMars, Iowa Wal-marts. I find it makes the casher go faster. I also think it's a polite thing to do.
Plus the casher was probably so busy she couldn't just take the bag and run after u to make sure u got it. Wal-marts are busy places especialy before a snow storm is going to hit.

SNAP! I feel it was your mistake b/c you always have to check behind other people in a situation like that (buying things from a store)...they are just as human as you but the difference is your paying your money for your merchandise. If you take $$ from out the bank don't you count it before pulling off in the drive thru? You always make sure because people make mistakes just like us.

If you specifically asked, it was her mistake.
I always spin the thing myself to make SURE because I've had this happen to me before (more than once).
Sounds like this cashier could use a good dose of customer service skills from your updated information......
