Heat the pc metal with the resistor wire evenly. Then apply the solder with Rosene flux . when u have finished clean with flux remover or alcohol. The pc metal should be grounded and make sure that your soldering tip has no potential or it will blow sensitive elements. With the solder cleaned it should be bright and shiny. If it looks dirty or rough it is a cold solder joint. Never use solder with acid core.

make sure the soldering gun is touching the copper on pc board, and the copper temperature melts the 70/30 solder.

Besides etching off all the copper on one side, or making identical traces on both sides, there is a 3rd option: You can etch out "copper cutouts" around each hole through the pcboard and use the rest of the copper as a ground plane. .
