the amount of current that it is going to take, there are tables available to help you choose the size of cable you should use.
Pick too small a cable and you risk a fire.
If its underground or overhead you need an armoured cable (extra protection and strength)

Total length, voltage, amperage, type of insulation and the environment in which it will be used. (Some must be oil resistent, etc.) In come cases weight is also a consideration.

most importance is current carrying capacity to avoid the conductor from overheating. other factors are insulation, shielding, etc.
