Pain medicine... but also try lying on your back, with your legs on a chair/couch - in a sitting position, but you are lying down. I've struggled with lower back pain for years and when it's really bad - that is the only relief I can find. Other than that, yoga and stretching your back every day seem to help a lot. Lie on your back and slowly pull your knees up to your chest - or as close as you can.

It depends on the causes of your pain. In cases where people have had accidents or falls, often back pain is caused by one or more levels of herniated nucleus pulpulsus, which is where a disc protrudes onto the nerves routed through the spine. This will cause pain locally and in many cases in the extremities as well.

Treatment for this problem is evolving. Traditionally, "old" doctors will want to perform a risky fusion which has a high failure rate. Also, microdiskectomy surgery is offered as an alternative, but is not the best option. Having a Plasma Disc Decompression in a minimally invasive mode (percutaneous) is safe and highly successful.

I would suggest you find the cause of your back pain. There can be many reasons and the best way to alleviate is to find the cause. Strengthen the stomach muscles by exercise can help as the muscles help control and support the back.

Believe it or not most pack pain is psyco-somatic (real pain caused mental problems, ie stress). If youre in a stressful situation your back muscle tend to contract and this causes pain over time.

A little light exercise might help, try yoga as it helps your body to relax.

OTC pain medicine might remove lower back pain but it does not remove the cause of the pain.
