Almost every country believed in God in on form or the other. Why did this begin. We may have evolved from animals but animals don't seem to follow God or do they? They just eat and mate. But surprisingly every human being from every place, humans did believe in God. Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas or wherever. It is not realistic to say that we wanted someone to be ruled by someone, that's why we created the concept of God. Mind you we evolved from animals and no animals wants to leave its dominance. And it cannot be coincidence that we just humans preferred God.
We cannot blindly say that as superstition too. It would be surprising to know that some religious texts were very scientific too. For instance look at Hindus they had almost every science ages back. They had Yoga for body health, ayurveda for good cooking, kamasutra for pleasure, vedic mathematics for calculations, artha sastra for economics and the list is too long to discuss here..more...

In fact they also predicted when the universe is going to die which happens to match very much with what scientists believe. Point is in spite of believing in science and technology themselves they just kept insisting that God is the only truth and is ubiquitous. Every thing else if just a matter of karmic effect. More we associate with the world farther we get away from our soul. Are we going in a wrong path?

Laura: Not all believed that earth was flat. Aryabatta a philosopher and mathematician in 200 AD proved that earth was round and also proved that earth moves round the sun. No Hindu killed him for saying that. It was trivial point for yogis.
I think you all are missing some point here. You are giving answers that are suitable for convincing someone as naive as a seventh grader. More important point is that there were scientists in the pasty too. Otherwise prediction of life of universe is not just a coincidence. And there are many more facts like that. Moreover even half the scientists today we are not just body. And even Hindus say the same. They don't talk about some supernatural god sitting somewhere. They are saying we are all souls and not the body. And that we need to realize that point.

It's simple. We had no understanding of how the world came about, or how things happened. We invented gods as an explaination for it all.

Given that all human beings have pretty much the same neuro-chemistry, it is not surprising that all human beings have a capacity for numinous and/or "spiritual" experiences that might lead them to conclude that there is a god. However, these experiences alone are not sufficient proof to demonstrate an independent existence for a deity who otherwise has consistently failed to demonstrate its prescence.
In other words, just because primitive peoples the world over have come to the same conclusion, that doesn't mean that they are right.

all gods created by the ancients were different, sometimes drastically so. that says, to me, that it is more likely the figment of imaginations, not an actual supreme being. we also all invented languages. every society has a language, so does this mean that the ultimate proto-language exists somewhere out there? god was invented to explain what we saw happening. we knew that life grew inside a woman and it came out of her and we were amazed by this pattern. cycles of life. birth, growth, death, decay. we knew this cycle repeated in everything, even the seasons. but why? we all came to the same conclusion, god. a god, many gods, spirits, etc. as science explains more and more god goes further back into the distance.

Sure the Aztec's believed in tons of Gods. They regularly sacrificed people to their Gods!
Just because people have fantasies does that mean that those fantasies are real or should be entertained??
Given how many millions have died in the name of the Christian God I'd say this world would be better off if the belief in that God went the way of the dinosaur!!!
No God could mean world peace!
LET'S GIVE IT A TRY!!!

It is not a coincidence. You raise a lot of good points. There is no real answer to your question, the only answer is to believe and have faith and not question everything that happens and try to prove everything wrong.
Although a lot of people who simply believe that all life is is your parents have sex, you are born, you die, bugs eat you.

Yes humans are very into causality even when none exists, its evolutionarily advantageous. Now we know why its not a coincidence, however it has nothing to do with the reality of god.
