If you are serious about giving up the dreaded ciggy, dont listen to aqll these people who tell you to get NRT (Nicotine Replacement Treatment). All that does is give you the drug you crave in a safer form.
Try getting hold of a copy of Allan Carr's - 'Easyway to stop smoking'. He was a reformed smoker who used to puff away on upto 100 fags a day. He does not tell you the evils of smoking, perils to your health etc, but he tries to explain why you started in the first place. I guarantee that you will rad through the book, and agree with every word he writes.
Another option is the Paul McKenna book on the same subject.
If you dont think you can give up without NRT, then try going into ASDA and signing on at the Pharmacy for the stop smoking campaign. They will take a CO2 reading and then give you the patched free of charge. It is a 10 week course, and each week you go, thy take a breath reading. As long as you are free from fags, they will pay for your patched.
Willpower is something you will need, but more than that you need the commitment to give up. It is no good trying to quit if you are not commited.
If you have to give the patched a go, fine, but do yourself a favour and buy Allan Carr's book, it will definately help.
If you are comitted, good luck, you are strong enough to do this

You have to want to give up. If you're just doing it because you think you ought to, temptation is going to get the better of you.
What motivates you? Finances? The smell? Having to stand in the rain and cold? Your health? Your street cred? Fed up with not being able to light up after a meal in a restaurant?
I thought I wanted to give up for the above reasons, but always failed. The thing that really made it do-able for me was the reality of wanting to start a family. I used will power - no patches, gum, hypnosis or other methods - and I have to say that once I was motivated it was much easier than expected.
Good luck!

It is the hardest thing ever. What works for one may not work for another. You have to make yourself disgusted by it.Stop smoking in the car, after you eat stay away from alcohol because they go hand and hand. It's a complete change of life. This is what i did.
I even went lower buying merit ultimates.Which even those i ended up liking. I quit by not buying my brand of cigarettes. You get used to your own brand and others taste funny.I would have one cigarette at night and not even the whole thing it tasted gross.I never tried it but there is the gum or patch that helps by cutting down then quitting. Some people swear by Welbutrin an anti-depressant.Nobody can make you quit you really have to hate yourself for doing it.Just keep your mouth busy with candy and gum. It's hard because nicotine is out of your system in a week but you miss the actual inhaling i know it's weird. You will be the most unbearable person ever but it's worth it.

Patches really work, I haven't smoked for 4 months now (2 months on patches.) You really need will power though. It's tough. Stop associating cigs with things eg, after dinner to make you feel fulfilled, at work when bored, when nervous/waiting for a bus etc. It's all in your head. Good luck!!

I wasn't quite ready to give up but read a book called Quit Easy by Jamey Ambersold.
I gave up the next day and haven't smoked for 4 years.
Remember, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS JUST ONE CIGARETTE!
Good Luck

Three of my friends that are smokers all went to the hypnotist on the same day. One lit up on the way out of the door, on started again after a week and one stopped completely. I would guess that realistically it depends on how much you really want to stop. Or how much someone else wants you to!

This sounds like nonsense but you have to convince yourself that you want to give up the evil weed. Until you do you will keep finding excuses to smoke, I know I was there and once I believed that I wanted to stop, hey no problem.

Just drop it. It's that easy. It's just a habit.
One powerful way which doesn't nned effort or will power (wich doesn't work) is using affrmations; simply repeat as often as u can:
I am willing to release the need for smoking (or cigarrettes).
