You're right. Up until that time it had not yet rained on the earth (which made Noah's job of convincing people all the more difficult).
According to the biblical account, not only did it rain from above but the "fountains" below the earth bubbled up and gushed over. Thus, the Floor occurred from above and from below.
As for where the water went, the earth is still over 70% water. That's a hint for you. The excess water settled and evaporated.

Yes, there was water on the earth. God created the oceans, etc. Besides which there was rain which rose from the earth and watered the earth.
Besides which God had "stored water:
Ps 33:7
7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;
he puts the deep into storehouses.
(from New International Version)
Which could be a greenhouse canopy which kept all the earth tropical enough to feed even the dinasaurs and other great creatures of that time.
OR it could have polar ice caps which held back global flooding.
The water came from BOTH above and below:
Gen 7:11-12
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
(from New International Version)
Most people believe that the water of the Flood formed the ice caps of the Poles about which many are worried will melt again by Global Warming and the flood the earth.
Gen 7:11-12
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
(from New International Version)

At the time of the flood, there WAS water on the face of the earth. There were oceans and lakes and rivers, and man had drinking water. There were clouds. The rains came from the sky, just like normal rain, only it lasted a LOT longer.

You are correct. There is no way that that amount of water could cover the earth.
If you read the Genesis account, you will read that the fountains of the great abyss burst forth (The New American Bible), which indicates subterranean water. But even that doesn't explain it.
What I believe happened is that a comet, or some other cosmic ball of ice came too close to the earth. When it approached to a pint know as Roche's Limit, the gravity of the earth overcame the gravity of the ice ball. Ice rained down on parts of the earth. This ice was much colder than any ice we currently have on earth. It was very close to absolute zero.
The result of this ice, besides inundating the planet with water, caused animals to be quick-frozen, some with tropical vegetation in their mouths. There is no mechanism on earth to explain this. You could not quick freeze an animal of that size today, unless you immersed it in liquid nitrogen, or some other super-cooled liquid.
As to where the water went, it is still here. I think that the gravitational effect on the earth from the ice ball precipitated the fissures in the earth, resulting in the releasing of underground water, and culminating in the raising of mountains, as the earth's crust folded.

The bible says the heavens opened (the beginning of clouds) and the water came from the ground.
Evaporation and oceans and lakes is where the water went.
P.S. before the flood, there was a covering over the whole earth that watered the land, like dew all the time. A completely different kind of atmosphere. Creationists think this is why humans lived so long during bible times.

Well I think that you are Misinfomed. Re-read the Bible.
As far as no rain, or clouds before the Flood, then how did all the animals Survive, along with Noah and His Family? The rain came from God! He is the one that made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. Just as the Rainbow came from God...His Promise, and Reminder that he will never flood the Earth Again!

It was in the atmosphere...... Lol. Like clouds, they are in the atmosphere. It just never rained back then, so when it did rain, the world flooded, because they did not have draining. Draining came later, and even draining would have trouble with the amount of water dropped that day on the earth.

If you are a believer you will understand the answer if you are not you might disregard it.
None the less check Genesis 7:11 talks about God opening the window of heaven and the fountains of the deep. with this there is an explanation of the waters above the earth on Genesis 1 fist couple of verses, if you read it carefully you will find your answer.
As for where the water went check Genesis 8 read the whole chapter just because it's good reading but the answer to your remaining question is in the begenning of the chapter.

Genesis 7:11—Where did the water causing the global Flood come from? During the second creative period, or “day,” when the earth’s atmospheric “expanse” was formed, there were waters “beneath the expanse” and waters “above the expanse.” (Genesis 1:6, 7) The waters “beneath” were those already on earth. The waters “above” were huge quantities of moisture suspended high above the earth, forming a “vast watery deep.” These waters fell upon the earth in Noah’s day.
I hope this answers your question :)

Lets see, I believe God sent the rain and he was able to do anything he wanted(still can) . I think the rain is all of our water and lakes etc known to us now. I can't comment on the fact that you say there was no water on the face of the earth prior to the Flood. I bet a lot of good answers will surface from this guest ion.
