The human brain divides perceptions into opposing pairs, which leads to the "us vs them" sort of mentality. Anything that is not us is against us, in this primitive response.
There is a great deal of reinforcement of this concerning homosexuals coming from the more primitive churches.

Because their book tells them its wrong. That and many men that are so hateful of it have had thoughts of it and fear that are gay.
Also, many religious people just dislike anything that's different from them.

well for me, i didnt have an opinion at first. i had gay co-workers and there sexual identity was of no matter to me. We would have cordial conversation i would ask questions because i didnt know and wanted to hear a gay mans perspective. so i was cool until, he crossed the line and tried to flirt with me. If you want to have sex with whomever thats your business!! but why would you disrespect me and approach me.
so now i just keep my distance and dont want to even to interact with gay men cause i think its a personal decision that has nothing to do with me, and i feel if i befriend them im saying that condone this behavior which i dont. what you do behind closed doors is your business, i wouldnt know if you wouldnt broadcast it.
I just dont like a man to cross the line and approach me

Most read it in a book. They will say that they don't fear OR dislike them though. but God said it was wrong and that's it. Of course their god also said that divorce and fornication (among other daily occurrences) were wrong, but it hasn't slowed them down any.

A combination of fear and ignorance. Really, what difference does it make what people do in their bedrooms? And why is it anybody else's business?

It has been said and I personally feel it makes sence that those who are homophobic are those that are afraid that they may be gay. Or those that would be gay if not for their religion telling them it is wrong.
If someone is secure with themself they have no need to fear anyone or anything!

Sexuality is incredibly powerful. I imagine the same things that make people afraid of prostitution, afraid of women, and afraid of their bodies is what makes them afraid of homosexuality.
