tribal is also very common. unless you come from a heritage that has a tradition of tribal tattoos then i don't understand why you would want to have a tribal tattoo. what aspect of your family to you want to pay tribute to? my mom is from korea so i have a tattoo that incorporates traditional korean art into it with a modern fun funky flair. it is my favorite tattoo and i couldn't be happier with it. be original. if you will give more details about your family it would be easier to find something that will suit you. feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I'm not big on tattoos, but here goes...
Follow your cultural heritage - some symbology that would represent that. What "tribal" attribute do you mean to convey? Would this be something totemic, like an animal representation? A bear represented by Germanic norms would look different from one represented by the Haida of northwest North America.
Different cultures and countries often have representative symbols/flags/animals/plants/color combinations that have persisted into modern times.
Have fun.
Some example links below.

It's difficult to answer this question without more information on your family and it's background. Many people choose to get a tattoo of the flag of their homeland, or their family crest, or a flower that symbolizes their country. However, it's difficult to give ideas without knowing your background.

Wait...you won't get Japanese or Chinese characters because they are too common...but TRIBAL is okay?! That makes no sense. Tribal is just as common as kanji...and just as ugly.
I don't know what kind of family ties you have or what your heritage is, but its a good start to look for a symbol of where you came from and where your blood line has gone through. Good luck.

I have a irish background so I found out our family's sign and put it on my back. It's only about the size of a fist and people always comment positively about it.

You could do a heart that is made out of the last name of your family and then do a fancy number in the middle sybolizing how many people are in your family.
