There are always going to be differences of opinion on this age old question. My vet, who incidentally, I have great respect for, feels that pups should be weaned at 6 weeks, and leave for their new homes at 7 weeks. He believes it's the best age for bonding with the new family. As I breed a very small breed, I feel it's a tad too young. Also, the Kennel Club here in the UK would frown on it for my breed. At present, they recommend 8 weeks, but there is talk of them upping it to 12 weeks. A pup leaving home at that age is going to find it so much more difficult to settle with new owners. They are going to be vulnerable and insecure, and nervous. Although I wean my pups, gradually, over a period of weeks, and pups leave around the 8 week mark, I do not, under any circumstance, remove them completely from Mum. While I don't expect her to sleep with her pups at 8 weeks, I find that (although there's not much milk left), pups will often suckle from Mum on the day they leave. If Mum is willing I would never stop this. It is never for a lengthy period, like when they're nursing a litter, and I believe it's just part of Mum/Pup bond.

A puppy should not leave its' Mother until it is 8 weeks old.

Many people sell puppies at 6 weeks, this is a poor decision. The puppy need those further 2 weeks to develop good toileting behaviour, socialisation skills and bite inhabilition.

You should never buy a puppy at less than 7-8 weeks of age.

Puppies are weaned from milk and start eating solid food at around 5 weeks, but they should not be taken from their mother this early. The mom teaches her pups vital dog skills from the time of 6-8 weeks, so it's important that they stay together for this time.

The minimum age that a pup can be taken away from his mother and littermates and placed into a home is 8 weeks.

7-9 weeks, dependant on breed. I would not take a dog from a breeder that was older than 9 weeks because it's important for the puppy to bond with it's owner and it needs to be socialised as soon as possible.

Some people would say that they are ready at 6 weeks of age..I have read in many books that it is important to keep them until at least 8 weeks because they learn a lot in the time and it helps with temperment

Now being separated from their mother and leaving to go to their new home are two separate things.
We start the weaning process @ 28 days (4 weeks) and separate the litter from their mother @ 35 days (5 weeks). NOTE THAT I SAID "LITTER" NOT "PUPPY" The puppy's should then remain together until they are a minimum of 49 days (7 weeks) and a maximum of 70 days (10 weeks)

Most puppies do not leave their moms until they are between 7 and 9 weeks old! After they have started on regular food.
