Kinda the same for human hair, if you wash it too often then you'll strip the hair of it's natural chemicals. For my dog I only ever wash her if she goes out and starts to roll around in things, other then that I let her keep herself clean. She's clean and healthy.

Really it depends on how much your dog smells. It is not nessessary to say that every other friday Fido must get a bath, unless Fido is a very smelly dog. If the coat is clean and doesn't requlse you with it's smell, there is no medical reason to wash your dog. It is the same as when you wash your hands too much and they get dry. A dog's coat makes natural oils that keep it silky and soft, and if you wash these off too often it makes the hair rougher. You can buy sprays that mask doggy odor and some even have conditioners in them meant for dog fur, if you think it's not quite time for a bath but Fido smells less than pleasant. Good Luck!

You should wash your dog like every 6 months, I know it sounds gross, but the more often you bathe a dog the more dry and damaged their skin and coat can get. You should only bathe more then 2 times a year IF your dog decides to play in mud and something else really dirty.

I am a firm believer that people wash their dogs way too much. Mine roll in stuff all the time. They get muddy, they dig holes, etc. They also go for a swim in this creek by my house. The water gets off all the dirt and mud, i leash them and let them roll in clean grass to dry off and we go home. Maybe once every 2 months, and only then if they have wrestled in the mud and it is too cold to go swimming. One of mine gets bathed more often than the other(still, like every 2 months) because she is mostly white, and the mud really shows up. Neither really smell. but you can wipe the dog down with babywipes or something if they get dirty.

my indoor sheltie only gets a bath when he starts to smell doggy...but he is combed daily and has his feet and underside wiped down daily with a damp miracle cloth. Once a month is the max for a bath at my house unless it's really muddy out. I know people do a lot more often than that but over bathing does strip the natural oils and it would depend on living conditions and/or habits.

No its NOT true. (but so many people still think that it is) This was true years ago when shampoos were detergent based and very harsh. Now a days, You can safely bathe your dog as often as once a week provided you use a mild good quality shampoo, conditioner and rinse rinse rinse.
My dogs, as well as several of my clients dogs get bathed once every 1 or 2 weeks...been doing so for years...great skin, great coat...no problems.

It just depends on how often they need a bath. I think up to twice a week is healthy, although it is not necessary. Just be sure to use a good dog shampoo. And if you do plan on washing the dog more frequently, use a medicated shampoo to keep their skin healthy. If you are looking for a cheaper shampoo...use blue Non-Ultra Dawn dish soap.....it's safe for their skin, effective, and gets rid of fleas and ticks. Good luck!

I was washing my dog every three weeks or so, but my vet said her coat was drying out, she said every 3 months was more than enough as long as she was groomed every day, the grooming should remove loose dirt. She said to only wash in between washes if she got particularily dirty by rolling in mud or something else dirty.

As often as they need it and depending on what sort of household you are and how strong is yur sense of smell. We bath ours about once a month. It takes the oil out of their fur but it comes back in a day or so

it depends on the breed. my spaniel could use a bath easily once every 2 weeks. my aussy shep can go a few months. my old dog, belgium shep, didnt have one the last 5 years of her life and was clean as could be.
it really depends on the kind of coat they have, and the food they eat, cheap food will make them look dull and their skin flakey.
