The past few years of my life have been hell.... I have had problems with my mum that caused me to run away for days on end, and eventually had to move away. Then I have been bullied alot of my life and threatened by people who just don't like me for who I am. Had my heart broken alot and suddenly lost feelings towards people in everyway possible. Had my baby brother die this year and caused alot of stress on me and my family... and its all getting alot worse!!
Doctor says I suffer from manic depression and it has finally lead to me having heart problems and is getting worse at a fast pace.
I am not sure what my options are but I am not going on anti-depressants as people who I know that have been on have ended up turning out worse when they come off them than that of which they were when they started. I have been looking into ECT (if you are unsure, watch House M.D se3ep11) and thats what i want done. should I consider this atall? having no memory of people?
Help?

In addition to what Shroom said, it is not possible to go back with my mum... She used to hit me all the time etc and her brother (never call him my uncle no more) keeps threatening to kill me and puts me down and makes me feel worthless.
I have a thing about talking to people about that... thats why im here so i wouldnt ever be going to police or anything as it would make it all worse.

You don't want shock treatments as a first choice of treatment. Lithium is used for bipolar disorder and they might have to adjust the dose, but I understand it's quite dramatically effective in leveling out moods.
Are you in England? If you are, the doctors there know more about food allergies than in US because they're more open minded (drug companies in US don't want the cause of problems stopping their sales of pills). Food allergies (also chemical allergies such as are used in plastics) can cause mood swings and problems that can lead to suicide. See if you can get someone to run a RAST test, and the results may solve all of your problems. Good luck!

First of all I would face your problems before you commit to ECT, just to see if you can come out of this by yourself. If you can it will make you such a strong person, and by dealing with the little things first you will feel much stronger to move on and deal with the things that have really hurt you in your life. I would suggest you speak to a councillor ASAP. It's not such a taboo, most people these days wouldn't think twice about it.
I wouldn't listen to the doctors, There is no medicinal cure for a broken heart! You have suffered alot of pain and upset, which has obviously made you feel the way you do right now. I think what you need to do right now is.... 1. confront your mum if this is possible. Tell her how deeply hurt you are, and that you want to move on and get help.....2. Go and speak to a councillor, Relate are pretty good, even if it's just a chance for you to pour your heart out, sometimes it helps, you will need a few weeks but I'm positive it will help.........3. Keep your mind active, read some self help books, join a group of somesort, you may even find religion a help......You'd be suprised to find many answers to your questions......
I really hope you can pull through this tough time, if it's any concillation, I find life tough sometimes, and I bet most people do too at some point.....
Be strong!

Hi sweetie. I have bipolar - have had it since 14, am now 26. I can only assure you that antidepressants/mood stabiliers work very very well. Bipolar involves an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and the medication such as lithium, sodium valproate etc help to restore those levels. Counselling will help but without meds counselling alone cannot shift your mood. I personally would never have ECT, they don't know how it works and it causes all sorts of problems with memory. It isn't a "first line treatment" anyway - it is always a last option. It does get better - I promise you, I have been there hun x

I am a mental health nurse and I would only advise ECT to people who have no other viable options.
Chronic depression with complete prolonged loss of appetite or depression which is totally unresponsive to alternative treatments.
The risks with ECT are many and it is really a last option.
Anti-depressants are by far your best bet - there are some not so good ones but the SSRI's used nowadays are excellent.

People who become worse after coming off antidepressants are usually those who believe they are better before they are. You may have to stay on an antidepressant/ and or mood stabiliser for many years before you can consider coming off it. Especially as you will have ongoing problems. Speaking as one who knows, only (in my opinion) consider ECT after you've trialled antidepressants and maybe a mood stabiliser alongside - sodium valproate is a good one. And given it a good try for a mimimum of 3 months.
If you are having heart problems you shouldn't have any problems with drug combinations but make doubly sure your doc knows.

manic depression/bipolar is not going to go a way if lose all your memory you'll just make the mistakes all over again. bipolar is chemical unbalance in the brain and as far as i know there operation that will fix it. but with a good doc and therapy it becomes more manageable. because without treatment things only get worst as times goes on or if your luckily they will stay them same and it seems like your not liking how things are as of now.
