I had a valid copy of windows. I had to receintly reinstall thanks to a virus. Now that my new copy is in, I cannot for the life of me find my old Activation Key. I was told that If I were to call Microsoft and explain my situation they can issue me a new one no charge. Does anyone know if this is true, or if there is another way to work it without having buying another copy?

Get the XP Permanent Patcher kit. It can get keys for you immediately.

Your activation key is the big long string on the Windows CDROM box. I think it's about 20 characters long - 5 sets of 4 character codes with dashes in between. Are you saying that you've lost the CD box with the code on it?.

For future reference, I write the CD key right on the CD upper surface with a Sharpie pen.

It's worth checking with Micro$oft. They are not unreasonable if you're on the up and up.
