I filed from F1 to green card.... the interview depends on the reason for filing... mine was marriage based. So I was asked a couple of questions about my marriage, but i guess it was quite apparent I did not have a fraud marriage or something, so he did not ask much other than how we met and started dating, when we got married etc, so he asked me more about my education (phd and master degrees etc) and about my husbands educations background, etc... than started to chit chat about those types of things etc...
they ask for bills, mortgage, documents proving we are self sufficient I guess....
I filled my adjustment of status and petition for alien relative, application for work permit (for during the wait) and travel document (permit) etc all at the same time.... so I got the travel docs and work permit first obviously.... then after my interview, and they approve you, there is nothing more to do... just wait for the card! if not, then you file petitions to re-examine your case!

GOOD LUCK!!!

AOS FROM what visa? An interview is almost mandatory; the only ones who sometimes get away without one is K-1 visa applicants (fiance visa), as they have been checked through the microscope in their home country before getting the visa. If you had a B2 or J1 or something like that, you usually sit together there and the I.O. asks some plain questions, like what your spouse's birthday is. Nothing tricky, like it's in the movie Green Card. They only get to stage 2, the stokes interview, if they have a suspicion that the marriage is fake, only entered for immigration benefits. What 99% of the I.O.s like to see is a nice album with wedding photos, as that's what a "normal" couple would have. If you had an overstay, that's not made an issue at all. If you entered without a visa but as a participant of the VWP, your luck ran out quite recently. Until about 5 weeks ago all of these AOS petitions were approved all the same, but since then many of them have been denied, which in the VWP's case often results in instant deportation. Note that you cannot use AP if you had an overstay, as that would trigger a ban. Hence my intitial question: AOS from what?
