take the vin # to the agent and they will help you most dealers anymore want insurance in effect asap to take the car,to cover their butts some lie and say they have it but it has lapse for several months.

You can't, of course, but you can get everything set to where you have everything in place except the specific car with your insurance agent. Then once you know what car you are buying, one phone call will take care of the insurance requirement. I'm sure the dealer would let you use his phone.

Find the car you want. Buy it.
Call your insurance agent. Buy insurance.
Show proof of insurance to dealer. Take Delivery. Dealer attaches temp tags.
Drive car home.
Go to DMV with paperwork and get title and tags.

If you have the VIN # then you can get car insurance before getting the car. Try getting a quote online. I am paying less than ½ of what I was before.

Once you decide on an insurance company they will provide you with an insurance binder "temporary insurance cards", the dealership will get you either a temporary tag or registration.
