I've been kicking around a story in my head for a while about commitment, and using a priest and his commitment to God to say something about commitment in relationships.

So I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me more info on a priest's daily life? I know the obvious like they can't date and such - but they can go hang out with their childhood friends right? Go to bars? If somebody could paint a picture of a normal day or weekend for a priest that'd be really helpful. Thanks!

Let's see... priests have "normal" lives when they aren't at work - many have hobbies (I knew I priest who was an AMAZING chef; another was an avid fan of Shakespeare), they take vacations, they visit with family and friends... They take walks or use the exercise bike or whatever to stay fit and some have favorite TV shows. Sometimes they will go out to dinner with parishioners. (One pastor I knew was very strict about keeping that to only one outing per family per month so as to not look like favoritism.)

In the dioceses of California (at least, the ones I'm familiar with), priests have one day off a week. (NOT Saturday or Sunday, for obvious reasons.) Most of them will pack up and stay with friends or family since they live where they work.

For Catholics at least, there is nothing saying a priest can't go to the bar. I don't think it would be wise for a priest to have a bar as a regular hang out, though. ;-)

What are the answers about Priests molesting boys not all Priests do that. Shame on You

As to the question a Priest is on call 24 hours a day, He does the morning Mass , visits the schools, hospitals and the sick, does funerals, weddings and Christenings, I have seen a Priest not sleep for over 24 hours as he was at the hospital attending a dying person. They work very hard with hardly any sleep

Yours in Christ

Like most anyone elses. He has an office and work to do - much of which deals with the administration of the parish. Difference is he begins his day by saying mass and stops at various points to pray. He also may have visitations to members of the parish who are ill or families who have lost someone. He may have meetings with the dioscese or with committees. He may have funerals to say, confession to hear or even a baptism or wedding to perform. He gets one day off a week when he is not on call and generally 4 weeks vacation a year.

Oh and yes - they hang out with friends. have friends come and stay for a visit or go and visit them. Just like anyone else

Depends on if the person's a lay-priest or a monk. If he's a monk then it goes according to the order he lives with. If he's a lay priest they're SUPPOSED TO start the day early with prayer... and through the day they pray what's called the "Liturgy of the Hours" (which is like a 5x/day thing, if I recall correctly) from a particular text with prayers that correspond to the day and season it is, celebrate masses according to their daily schedule, visit the sick, do confessions on particular days like Saturdays, (i.e. administer the Sacraments) and if they have a higher "ranking" member of the hierarchy in town the "politics" of the job falls in order...

Things like that...
