depends on the type of caramel. if the little square thingies we buy then no nothing needs to be added as long as they are fresh. if they are a bit hard you may need to add a touch of milk but not much. I cheat I make my turtles in mini tart papers so they hold their shape. by setting the paper in a tart pan it makes things a lot easier. just pop the nuts in then the caramel then chocolate heaven. wait to set and eat till my eyes pop. Pecan Turtle Candy Recipe
2 l/4 C. packed brown sugar
1 C. butter or margarine
1 C. light corn syrup
l/8 t. salt
l (14-oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
1 t. vanilla extract
1 l/2 lbs. whole pecan halves
1 C. (6-oz.) semisweet chocolate chips
1 C. (6-oz.) milk chocolate chips
2 T. shortening.
In a large saucepan, combine the first 4 ingredients. Cook over med heat until all sugar is dissolved. Gradually add the milk and mix well. continue cooking until a candy thermometer reads 248ºF. (firm ball stage) Remove from heat stir in vanilla until well blended. Fold in pecans. Drop by tablespoon onto greased cookie sheets. Chill.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening in the microwave or in a double boiler. Drizzle chocolate over each pecan cluster.
Yield 4 dozen

CARAMEL TURTLES
CARAMELS:
1 c. butter
1 can Eagle Brand milk
1 lb. brown sugar
1 c. light corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
Dash of salt
TURTLES:
1 (12 oz.) pkg. milk chocolate chips
1 pkg. Bakers German sweet chocolate
1/3 bar paraffin
Pecans
In heavy pan, melt butter, add brown sugar and salt. Stir in syrup gradually; cook to 245 degrees or almost hard boil. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and pour in buttered 9 x 13 pan. Cut into squares; press pecans into each square of caramel. Melt chocolate chips, German chocolate and paraffin together and pour over caramel pecan patties

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup boiling water
PREPARATION:
In a small heavy skillet, melt sugar, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. When sugar is golden brown, very slowly and carefully stir in the boiling water. Cook for about 3 minutes to soft ball stage*, to about 238° on a candy thermometer.

No, you don't need to add anything to the caramel, just melt it down and drizzle it over your pecans, then let it cool. When it's cooled, dunk the candies in melted chocolate and let set until firm.

If you are making your own caramel you would have to mix the sugar with evap milk or cream, but since you are "zaping' them no.
