I was arrested by a guy who I had gone to school with - hadn't seen each other in a few years. Was decent enough - gave me a smoke before putting me in the cell and chatted about stuff. Does this happen much?

It was a bit embarassing - more than usual - getting cuffed by somebody you knew.

Not sure about policemen arresting frinds etc, but do know that Albert Pierpoint actually hanged one of his best friends.

On November 28, 1950, Albert visited Strangeways prison, Manchester, to carry out the grim task of hanging James Corbitt. The man had murdered his girlfriend in a fit of jealous rage, strangling her and daubing the word ‘whore’ across her forehead in indelible ink.

It was just another crime and just another name to Pierrepoint until – looking through the observation window beforehand - he was stunned to recognise Corbitt as a regular and friend from his Struggler’s pub.

The two men, who affectionately nicknamed each other Tish and Tosh, had even sung their regular Saturday night duet of ‘Danny Boy’ in the pub on the night of the murder.

Pierrepoint proceeded with the execution but is thought to have been haunted by the experience. Most shocking of all to him was the realisation that a man so personally aware of the punishment and the hangman himself had not found the death penalty to be a deterrent.

This happens often especially in small towns or areas where you had stayed before.
As a Police Officer, you know most of the people in this areas and some are very close. But an offender or person/s who are under a warrant are normally approach by officers who knows him well. They normally ask them to surrender themselves or are physically arrested by the officer.

Good Luck

I was deputy in a small county that I grew up in so I knew almost all of the people I had to arrest. It made it easy for me as I knew who was dangerous and who was not. When we got a bunch of warrants I would go through them and pick out the ones that i knew and call them and tell them to come in. believe it or not they all came in and made bond. Most people would rather come in than have the cops come and get them in front of the neighbors. They also knew that I would come and get them if they didn't.

The definition of constable in england is 'a citizen appointed locally'therefore the chances are that a lot of officers will arrest people they know.I did and even the odd relative.

I was a village bobby and because I lived in the village I frequently had to arrest someone I knew. Police officers can"t pick and choose who they arrest.

I have had to. It was someone I knew from high school and yes it was weird for them and me. I am a parole agent so I try not to supervise people I know, conflict of interest, but if I have to help arrest them, then I go.

Police officers have to arrest people they know more often than you might think.
It may be a tough for them to do but they have sworn to uphold the law and are called on to do their duty no matter who the lawbreaker may be.

Yep.

The guy we arrested was a guy I enjoyed working with. He was funny and always seemed to handle his business.

But we soon found out that he was a straight up thug. It did not sound like him at all. I was glad he was finally caught.

That all depends on the cop and what you're being arrested for. If it's minor, they let you go with a warning. If it's major, it's embarrassing for everybody, and if they're a gung ho ---hole, they enjoy it.
