I've been a kayaker for over a decade, if I needed a cheap boat, I would get a hard plastic one, they are the best, something wtih a nice fit complete with thighbraces, seat, backbrace of some kind, and foot pads. You should look at used ones at various shops, just search for local kayaking shops and go there on yahoo or google locals. they go for as low as 250 and as high as 700 bucks used. For a begginer, you should start out with a white water river runner, they are well rounded and you'll learn a lot in them. If you decide you'd rather go white water just get a playboat anytime, since used kayaks hold their value unless you dent them badly, you can usually get the price you paid for them or higher.

Sea kayak? Slalom or touring? Start with either a fiberglass/resin or rigid plastic model. Inquire at kayak clubs. Check with American Canoe Association for a local club. Inflateables ought be avoided.

try ebay or the classfieds in your local paper. possibly place an ad stating this what you are looking for. probably avoid stating price so they don't tell you they have one for 400 when they originally only wanted 300 for example
