Surely it doesn't just come down to how smart or dumb you are? What about values or family traditions

By definition an Officer is a leader. However as a former Navy Chief, most of my "Superiors" answered to me. So I would rather be in that position and appear to most to be submissive when really it was me leading all the time. Sweet.

I like being an officer, but it's the enlisted guys who get to have all the fun. Privates get to go on missions, sneak off for a little down time, and are expected to goof off a little.

How many meetings does a private have to go to?

I hate death by power point....

The officers, who pretend to serve the American people, are incompent wannabes, probably because overdiscipline destroys their ability to think flexibly. The fascist attitude is what created the German officer corps, who have been losers just like our own bossy, conceited, anti-civilian (therefore, anti-American) robots, who succeed, when they occasionally do, only because of the superior weapons invented for them by geeks.

These officers are also dishonest, which results from lying to themselves about their own qualifications. All the training in the world can't make low-IQs into real leaders of men. They make up stories about how victorious their firefights are and how victory is just around the corner. Whiners, they blame the media for the disastrous results of their own incompetent tactics and strategy. They have no business forcing their Nazi-Con political opinions on us--that's like a member of the Bears commenting on Chicago politics. But since they can't do their own job, they butt in where they have no competence.

The Pentagon, or whoever is responsible for choosing officer candidates, wanted puppets and got dummies. They wanted mice and got rats. They wanted worms and got snakes.

I'm intelligent but not a leader (leading people brings out the worst in me, I'm afraid). I'd probably be some kind of technical support geek or specialist.

it is best to be enlisted because you can get with the locals and when a scandal erupts, just throw the blame on your CO.
