Assuming you have a good hair straighteners then the best thing to do would be to seperate the hair as well as you can, by clipping it up and pulling small locks down. That's to get a very sleek effect. With a good set of straighteners you can do a lot.
There is also a process called Japanese Hair Straightening, or Thermal Reconditioning.
The process for Japanese hair straightening goes as follows:
The stylist assesses the hair type and condition.
The hair is washed.
If necessary, protein is applied to the hair. There is a small extra charge for this procedure, but it is possible for the customer to end up with less than satisfactory results if the protein is not applied.
Solution #1, which breaks the hair's disulfide bonds, is applied.
The stylist rinses the first solution out of the hair when he or she deems it necessary.
The hair is partially blow dried.
The hair is ironed in small sections with a thermal straight iron.
A second solution, which reforms the broken disulfide bonds, is applied.
Hair is rinsed and conditioned.
Hair is blow dried once more.
I wouldn't recommend it - I don't think it's worth the hassle, but I've never had it done..

Well, a good ceramic flat iron should do the trick fast so you are not exposing your hair to too much heat. Also a good brush and blow dryer will work. Make sure to use products that are meant for hair straightening that will protect your hair from damage. Chi makes some good stuff- they also make the flat irons that are pretty good (although pricey.) Do not use a regular iron even with paper- this will burn your hair, plus it will be extremely difficult to do (you would have to put your head right next to ironing board and you may burn your head or ears.)

I use a curl moose on wet hair then dry it with a curling GHD brush as this helps shape it a pulls out the kinks and gives it volume. Then I follow with G H D straightener for a smooth shine. then I spray a little leave in conditioner on the ends to stop them looking dry. This works for me because I have frizzy wavy hair that does not like the outside weather.

I recommend a Ceramic straight-iron. They heat up really fast and are safer for your hair. If you are worried about drying out your hair, I use Proffesional Silky hair, it's the off-brand of Biosilk, but works just the same. As an added bonus, it smells good and is good for your skin too! So once I get done with my hair, I take what is left on my hands and rub it in. Hope this helps.

Ok, please, please don't use the straighteners that go up to scalding temperatures, it is bad for your hair and also if you burn yourself on them it will hurt like hell. You only need these if your hair is uncontrollable anyway (like really curly/thick). Use VO5 heat protecting spray or toni & guy heat defence spray to stop your hair going frizzy and dry. I find that by spraying leave-in conditioner on hair after washing normally (I use boots coconut leave-in) it stops hair being uncontrollable to straighten
As for the actual straightening, use duck clips to separate your hair into sections and straighten till you are satisfied with the result.

Hope I was of some help!

apart from the obvious using ceramic hair straigteners with heat defence spray/cream i find that if i wash and blow dry my hair then leave it for about an hour it calms down a bit (as it can be a bit frizzy) then it is quicker to straighten so i spose thats also better for your hair 2 coz its not being subjected to so much heat! :-)
