This can be caused by a lot of things:
Are you a smoker?
Are you sleeping on an incline (too many pillows)?
Your body forgot to breath
You choked on your own saliva
Are you gasping before you are fully awake and then start coughing?
Is it a dry cough or a phlemy one?
Call a nurse and fill her in on all the details and see what she says to do.

Coughing is a normal reaction, think of it like this, tiny little hairs are in your throat, when things such as dust as the person before said settles in your throat the hair catch it and try to get rid of it by forcing your body to cough, forcing the item out of your throat. During times of year when there are a lot of things floating around in the air we find ourselves coughing more often

I would love to help but you have provided limited information , are you an asthmatic?? a smoker?? all these things can cause the exact symptoms you are describing, and all these are very easily treatable , dont be scared , very few things in this day and age are incurable , so pay your local doc a visit and get yourself fixed , you'll probably find its a minor issue ( and could even be due to an airconditioner etc )
Good Luck!

What are you scared about? You either have some phlegm in your chest, or the air in your room is so dry that it makes you cough.

Sounds like your typical run of the mill, tickle in the throat, caused by dust particles that you've breathed in. No biggie, if you start to get other symptoms though, go to your doctor.
