It could just be dry skin or allergies. You can bathe her with an oatmeal shampoo made for dogs about every two weeks to relieve the itching. If that doesn't solve the problem you're probably dealing with allergies. Allergies are actually fairly common in dogs. You can have your vet test what she's allergic to and they'll probably also check for mites. Most allergies in pets are due to dust, food, certain pollen, and of course fleas. Your vet will advise you on the best treatment. Treatment could include Benadryl or changing her food or she may have to get an allergy shot each month. Some dogs even have to get put on the steroid Prednisone. The allergies will only get worse with age. When you take her to the vet make sure you know how long this has been going on, where she scratches/licks most (belly, paws, groin, legs, etc), have you noticed it worse at certain times of year, and what kind of food she eats. These will all help the vet figure out what type of treatment path to take. Not all vets can do the allergy test very extensively so they may refer you to a Veterinary Dermatologist.

If she has no issues during the winter when it's bloodless it's a seasonal allergic reaction. Without doubt nothing to do with meals or it would be yr round. My bet would be plant pollens. Most likely grass due to the fact it's quite often on her paws and legs. Examine the crops on your yard. I know Wisconsin could be a bit humid throughout the summer time. Might it's a heat rash? Get some little one powder and maintain her white. I have an American Pit Bull with allergy symptoms and the Vet recommended Clairtin. The low-priced regular from Wall Mart. She is five now and seems to have outgrown her problems. Just right success.

Most likely your dog has allergies, It may be an allergy to the food it is eating or an environmental allergy such as grass or pollen. There are some foods that are less allergenic - for some dogs it is lamb and rice formulas for example (though I have a dog that is allergic to lamb - go figure). Your vet can help you with appropriate treatment. Short-term steroid treatments can relieve symptoms as can antihistamines such as benadryl. There are also baths you can give relieve symptoms. A change in diet to a different food that is less allergenic is definitely worth a try. You may also find that your dog only gets itchy in certain seasons - which may point to a grass or pollen allergy.

She could have a skin allergy.

Many dogs are actually allergic to Beef.

To try and figure out what is causing the problem, I'd reccomend, removing all beef and red meat from her diet, stick to white meats like Chicken.

Also try 1 x Fish Oil Capsule per 10 kg's of body weight per day.

Fish Oil depletes Vit E, so you wany to get a brand of Fish Oil which has included Vit E, if you can't find one that does, then give 1 x Vit oil capsule every 2nd day.

My dogs are the same way. In the winter their skins gets a little dry, so we bathe them with an oatmeal based shampoo...we also give them a little olive oil with their food as that also helps with the dry sking. Another thing is we brush them ALOT, sometimes the little hairs that they are shedding get stuck and that can annoy them.

She may have dry scalp. Our dog had the same problem. We tried an oatmeal bath to a leave on conditioner. For us, we found out that a dandruff shampoo worked the best.

You might want to visit the vet if the problem persists.

It could be dry skin or maybe your dog has developed skin allergies. Change her food to something w/o wheat. That is the #1 culprit for allergies. (check nutroproducts.com - they guarentee skin and coat)

Also use linolaic acid, flax seed oil or a product called linotone. It'll help with the dry skin.

When shampooing your dog (which shouldn't be very often) try an oatmeal based heavy conditioning dog shampoo.

Good Luck

I will agree with one of the other answers you've received that it could be that your pet is alergic to food,or something it may be4 coming into contact with, but if all else fails try dipping your pet in the Lym Dip,or the Paramite dip that can be purchased at any local feed store,as your pet may have contacted the tiny mites than the human eye can hardly see.

my mom's golden lab has the same problem. he has dry skin, and in areas on his tummy it is severe when not taken care of. my mother bathes her dog with an oatmeal soap made for humans by Aveeno once a week and puts a little olive oil on his food. the oil will help to moisturize the skin. sometimes she puts a little bacon grease for a special treat, but i wouldn't recommend this if your dog is overweight. you can also get spray-on moisturizer and spritz it on everyday, especially if the humidity is low.
