My girlfriend just moved into a new apartment where there used to be a cat, and I am allergic to cats, so I feel like crap when I visit her. What would be a good air filter (not outrageously expensive) to buy to take the allergens out of the air? She had the carpets cleaned which helped somewhat, but I can still feel it when I go in. Any ideas?

I've tried HEPA room filters, but they are $$ and always broke within the first week.

My advice -- go down to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a 1month high-quality filter for her central air. The standard air filters are bad at filtering out pollen/smoke/pet dander, but the 1 month filters do a good job -- just remember to change them monthly. They filters are marked with a HEPA rating and will clearly state what % of particles they filter out; I usually buy the "silver" grade. If there is a certain area of the apartment that gets to you, then Febreeze the heck out of it. Also, if the previous owners left any draperies, then you'll want to wash those for sure. I've heard of people getting their duct-work cleaned, and that might be an option to consider if you're really desperate.

"Air filters are very helpful. We usually suggest a HEPA filter (e.g. Enviracaire by Honeywell) which must remove 99.97% of all particles .0003 mm in size. It is also somewhat helpful with pollutants which are a problem for patients with both allergies and asthma. I used the Enviracaire CPZ filter in my bedroom when painting was being done and could barely smell the paint. Air conditioners are very helpful in reducing dust, pollen and mold, but remember that the filter must be kept clean and dry, because dust and mold can accumulate. "
I hope it helps.
