That depends on the nature of the breed; dog's own personality; whether or not it was raised with cats or trained/allowed to chase small animals and cats....

It depends on the dog, and on the cats. Terriers and Dachschunds generally are not, because they were bred to kill small animals and have a high prey drive. A miniature or toy poodle would probably be OK with cats, because they were bred primarily as house pets - depending of course on the individual personality of the poodle, and the personalities of the cats. If the cats make the poodle nervous, you'll need to use positive reinforcement to make sure the dog sees the cats being around as a positive thing (and vice versa, if the cats don't like the dog). The 2nd link below gives helpful advice for that.

Here's a couple of good articles about introducing a dog to a cat household:

That really depends on several different things. Some small dogs, like terriers, were originally bred to hunt small vermin. So instinctively, they look at a cat as game. However, dogs, big or small, raised with cats usually will grow up accepting the cat as a member of it's pack. The best thing is probably to get the dog as a puppy, and raise it alongside the cat.

I think it depends on the dog. If you already have cats and are thinking of a small dog then I would say if you decide to do this get a young puppy. They tend to not care whether their playmates are puppies or kitties. They just want to play with whatever will play. Your cats will put him in his place if they need to.

If your cats have claws, watch the dog for scratches. If the cats do scratch him it may get infected. My cat gets my dog once in a while when they are playing. They don't really fight, but the cat will use his nails when he is playing and sometimes the dog gets scratched.

Its a dogs personality, you also have to teach them to not hurt the cat. Some dogs get along great with cats no matter the size, if you are planning on getting an animal just make sure you introduce them and make sure that every thing is going to be okay, if they dont get along right away keep them apart, eventually they will get used to each other.

I have a Beagle and she plays very well with our cat. We also had a poodle stay with us for a while and they got along very well. It just depends on how old your cat is and the temperament of the dog.

I think that would be on a case by case basis...and you'd also want to know whether a particular cat would be good with small dogs. My cat does not tolerate other animals period.

My min pin is great with cats and loves visiting Nana and Papa to visit Tiger. They're buds. It just depends on the temperament of the dog.

it depends on the dog and the cat. is the cat accepting of a canine friend? and also, i tend to think calm dogs will get along better with a cat friend.
