It's all about the game. What motivates your dog? Food, play, certain toys?
When your dog does "the business" outside make a big deal about it. Treat or play etc.
When your dog does "the business" inside make NO deal about it. And as hard as it might be you DO NOT want to rub his nose in it or spank his bottom. You don't want to scold him etc. This will turn him into a shy pottier which means you'll smell it but won't find it. He'll start hiding from you when it's time because he has equated that potty means spanking. And if you want him to do it outside in front of you - there's no way!
Feed him on a schedule. Food goes down - 10-15 min to eat and thats it. 30 min- 1 1/2 hours afterwards (depending on your dog) keep an eye out for excessive sniffing, running to certain spot, back arching, etc.
When you see those signs put him in sit, click the leash on and out you go.
Make sure to clean the spot he usually goes to w/ things like Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle. It breaks down the enzymes he can smell and prevents him from going to that spot.
There is also deterrant you can purchase from Petsmart or Petco that you can spray on upholstry or carpeting that also helps to deter him from using the carpet as his toilet.
Good Luck

Usually dogs over 2 have trubblke learning things can you immagine someone comming up to you when you had always peeded your pants at a ge 25 and telling you how to go to the bathroom? You probably need proffesional help try go to a local petstore they can give pretty good information and places like Petsmart can even offer classes to help and the people there always know what they're talking about. And hey props to you for saving that dog I personnally volunteer at an animal shelter ( no kill) and it breaks my heart when people won't even come down to look at the dogs there! And it makes me even sadder when a great dog is stuck here for years just because no one wants tio come down. So props to you man! And to any one else reading this if you go to your local animals shelter there are lots of puupies there sometimes you can even find purebreeds! And its cheaper than getting puppies anywhere else its only $50 to adopt a dog but, you can also get cats, hamsters, birds, parrots, ferrets and all kinds of animals! So adopt and save a life!

I had an adult dachsund, and i now have a mini dachsund puppy.
My adult dachsund is outside trained. I trained her by takeing her outside every 30 mins. to an hour, and also every time she was done eating and/or drinking. I would make her stay outside for like 10-15 mins. If she had just eaten or drank something, I would make her stay outside till she did something. As for the puppy, I just bought those puppy pads (like $ 4 for 15) and showed them to her and she started using them. Kind of like potty training a cat.

Our little doxie (7 months) is on and off, as a whole, I hear that they are one of the worst for housebreaking. We have had success for a while, then he just regresses again.
Just have to try and catch them in the act and use the treat system as consistantly as possible. Let me know if you find anything that works well for your dog.

try wee wee pads and see if that helps, keep moving them towards the door until he gets the hint, be patient, or you can crate him while your out,and when you get home take him outside until he does his stuff, after he eats take him out , if he poops in the house take the poop and put it in the yard where you want him to go to the bathroom, keep taking the poop outside and show him that's where th poops belongs
