As long as your laptop has at least 512 MBytes of RAM (1 GByte would be even better) and enough free disk space - Vista on its own consumes roughly 10 GBytes of hard disk space, Vista ought to run fine. In order for the graphical effects ('Aero') to work you need to have a DirectX 9-compatible graphics adapter of course. Example would be nVidia GeForce Go 6100 and up.

PCs that meet the minimum supported system requirements will be able to run the core features of Windows Vista with the basic user experience.

if you have atleast the following specifications then you can run windows vista:

Windows Vista Minimum Supported System Requirements
Processor 800 MHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
System Memory 512 MB
GPU SVGA (800x600)
Graphics Memory -
HDD 20 GB
HDD Free Space 15 GB
Optical Drive CD-ROM drive

I don't think it is worth upgrading to Vista unless you have bought a computer VERY recently. Due to the overhead of the graphics and such (which is a big reason for upgrading), you will probably slow down significantly.

Good Luck!

You may get your laptop all mixed up with new software.
