you can adopt a dog from a rescue organization or group in your state.
go to google and type in: dog rescue in _________________
enter the state you are in and you will get a listing of all the non-profit organizations where you can adopt a dog cheaply.
since they are non-profit, all they charge you is the cost of the shots and what it cost them to care for the dog. they care for the dogs, train them, give them their shots and prepare them to go to good homes. also, you are assured that the medical condition and the personality of the dog you choose would be the best one for you. they try to match their pets with their new owners.
good luck! and i am very sure you will find the pet that best fits you.

Do NOT buy from a pet store. This supports the cruel puppy mills that they are shipped from!
Find a dog breed that is a good match for you and then check with rescues or "reputable" breeders (not backyard breeders) A breeder that OFA health tests and shows their dogs to prove their worthiness of being breeding quality dogs. Many good breeders out there have websites for their dogs, this helps so you can see photos of their dogs and learn about their breeding ethics. Get a list of breeders for your chosen breed, contact them, go out to meet them if possible, and ask lots of questions! Expect to be questioned back, as GOOD breeders want to know about the potential homes their puppies will be going to.

You could check with your vet. They may have a cliet that is a reputable/responsible breeder.
try the AKC breeder classifieds. Just keep in mind just because they are listed on the AKC site does not mean they are reputable breeders (I've seen doberman litters advertised with a white sire or dam or both, AKC disqualification, cannot be show, so why breed 'em?) Do your homework, ask for vet references, contact info on previous buyers. STAY AWAY FROM THE PETSTORES. They get their pups from puppymills, and parentage cannot be guaranteed, they do not back up health guarantee, and most of the time, you have to use THEIR VET!

Use this website:
http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm
Find a local club that breeds the dog you want. Get in contact with the breeder. Make sure it is a legit breeder; some breeders are referred to as "puppy mills" because they just pump out sick puppies for profit.
Be careful, and remember the dog you find will be with you for at least the next ten years. Make sure it is a healthy one.

In any state - try adopting. There are hundreds of shelter dogs in every city that need good homes. And even if you are wanteing a pure breed - you would be amazed how many pure bred dogs pass through dog pounds. It's where I obtained my first boxer. She was pure breed, already house broken, trained to sit, stay....
give it a try. It feels really good to know that you've saved a dog from euthanasia.

WHAT FLIPPING STATE DO YOU LIVE IN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH three really weird non explination questions in a row. Thank god i get some points just for answering.
oh you people that like to rate things, go rate yourselfs. Jeez if you want specific answers then ask specific questions, DID you read the question? "the state i live in" How do we know what state? Why would i want to suggest a sight that covers nothing near where she or he might live? I could give a HUNDRED websites but why? when one simple word can help narrow the answer to something so simple and great. ANyone that reads any of my posts know that i am a very very thorough and nice poster. By the way Petfinder.com doesnt regulate who posts, so yes backyard breeders can be on that sight and often are. In one year we received 75 dogs inot our shelter, that were purchased from Petfinder.com posters.

try typing in the breed of dog into like a yahoo search engine with rescue agencies or something like that after it... for example, i am adopting a dog from rottrescue.com and there are different ones for different areas of the country.

Contact breeders in your area and go visit them. Play with the different breeds and then decide which one suits you. There is always that one dog that will speak to your heart and that will be that.

Try a local breeder or a pet store. We got our dog from the pet store in the mall and she is the best dog I have ever seen.
