Its all about form. Using free weights you have so build up your stabalizer muscles first. This is going to take some time. Until then your going to find yourself shaking as you lift. Safety is first i think so remember to start off easy and work your way up to a weight that is challenging. If you dont have a spotter make sure your not trying to lift as much as you can, tone it down until you have one. And lastly do more sets of lower reps if your looking for bulk, but if you just want definition then about 3 sets of high reps with lighter weights.
Remember good form will serve you better then bad form and more weight. To find out about form grab a book about lifting or stop by a gym.
If you cant use weight max out on push ups and leg lifts. Twice a day. Once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Do as many push ups as you can both times. Remember good pace good form. Then do as many leg lifts as you can same thing witht the form. It'll hurt the first week, but after that your body will get used to it. Thats how i train for climbing... It works like a charm.
Drink lots of water.
Good luck
