I really don't want to do this, but the world is so Mac-unfriendly. I have a lot of coursework/programs for college that can only be done on a PC...please use simple words as I am a lay person in terms of computers. Will it work just like a PC? Will it be like I have two different computers on one laptop? Thank you

Simple words: You can't. Vista for home users is not in release yet. It will go on sale in one week. Besides, you don't need the newest one. You should be able to get by with a smaller (and cheaper) OS, like WinXP or even something older.

Second. If you want to add a different operating system to you MacBook, make sure that you get software designed to work on your MacBook. Like any software, read the system requirements in the manual/on the box before purchasing or installing it.

Likely, if you want a non-Mac OS on your MacBook, you should find the software for Mac (XP for Mac, etc.), and install it as a secondary OS. That way you can still use the Mac functions, but also us it as PC when needed.

Finally, I'm not sure what problems you have encountered that your Mac cannot do. In every college I have attended, there are both PCs and Macs. Perhaps you should take some time to work with someone in your campus' Mac Lab to configure your MacBook to optimize your use.
